Born in County Tyrone, Ireland and died in Greenbrier Co, WV. Sarah Gallagher and John Harvey Hanger were married in Greenbrier County, WV in 1858. Children: Margaret Ann and William Harvey Hanger (twins-born in 1859). Third child Charles David Hanger-1861-1940. John Harvey Hanger, a carpenter by trade was enlisted into the Confederate Army in 1862 so promptly that he did not get to return home to see his wife and children. The battle of Lewisburg, WV was fought nearby. Over 300 Greenbrier men served in the 14th Cavalry of the Confederate Army in that battle, twenty five of them did not survive. After the Battle of Lewisburg on May 23, 1862, the Confederate dead were buried in a mass grave. John Harvey Hanger and two Confederate comrades died of wounds afterward. John Harvey Hanger was a member of the newly recruited militia that fought its first battle on May 23rd. The identities of the other two was unknown. They are buried together at the Old Stone Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Lewisburg, WV.
