Biography
Thomas Jeffrey Hanks was born July 9, 1956. He is an American producer, actor, and filmmaker.
His first major movie was Ron Howard's "Splash" in 1984, then after that he starred in successful movies such as "Big" in 1998, and "Punchline" also in 1998.
He won an Academy Award in 1993 for Best Actor, for his role in "Philadelphia". For the role, he lost 35 pounds and thinned out his hair to portray a discriminated gay lawyer with AIDS.
His next movie, "Forrest Gump" was in 1994. He won his second Academy Award for Best Actor. He was only the second actor to win Best Actor Academy Awards consecutively. Forrest Gump made over $600 million at the box office worldwide.
Tom portrayed astronaut Jim Lovell in his next movie, "Apollo 13" in 1995. The movie earned 9 Academy Award Nominations, and won twice. During that same year, Tom starred as the voice of Sheriff Woody in the movie "Toy Story".
Next, Tom was an executive producer, co-director, and co-writer of the HBO docudrama "From The Earth To The Moon". The 12 part series chronicled the NASA space program from the beginning; recalling the familiar space flights of astronauts Neil Armstrong and Jim Lovell. Tom shares his personal feelings surrounding the moon landings reality. He won an Emmy Award for this docudrama, and the cost was $68 million to produce. At the time, it was one of the most expensive ever productions for television.
His next role was in "Saving Private Ryan", produced by Steven Spielberg, an epic war movie. Tom was nominated for Best Actor for his performance, and Spielberg won his second Academy Award for direction.
In 1999, Tom portrayed a FedEx employee, stranded on an island after his plane crashed in the ocean in "Cast Away. He won a Golden Globe award for Best Actor, and another Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. He also voiced Woody in the sequel "Toy Story 2" in the same year. He made 3 movies between these two films.
in 2001, Tom co-directed and co-produced "Band Of Brothers", an HBO 12 part miniseries about World War II. He won an Emmy Award for Band of Brothers.
Tom has remained an active producer, director, and actor, He has made numerous movies throughout his career. Tom's first wife was Samantha Lewes, and they had 2 children. His son Colin was born in 1977 and is also an actor. His daughter Elizabeth Ann was born in 1982. Tom married his second wife Rita Wilson in 1988. They have two sons together, Chester was born in 1990 and Truman was born in 1995. Tom and Rita reside in Los Angeles currently.

He is the 15th cousin once removed of Watergate-era Washington Post editor Benjamin Bradlee Sr., whom he portrayed in The Post (2017). Most recently and most closely-related, Hanks is the sixth cousin of children's television presenter Frederick McFeely Rogers (1928-2003), whom he portrayed in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019).
