Biography

Mary "Polly" Hanks was born some time around 1773 in North Farnham Parish, Richmond County Virginia to Joseph Hanks and Ann Lee. We can identify Polly as one of the Hanks sisters by how Dennis Hanks (her nephew) described relationships between Polly and other Hanks family members, from her marriage record, from letters of later descendants, and from her father's last Will. See Evidence Summary below.

Polly's family moved from North Farnham Parish in the early 1780's to Hampshire County, and then on to Kentucky. Polly probably lived in Mercer and then moved on to Hardin County with some of the family, where in 1795, she married Jesse Friend.[1]

As of the 1810 census, Polly and Jesse were still living in Hardin County, but now with 6 children in the household: 2 girls 10-15 years old, and 4 children under the age of 10 (2 boys and 2 girls).[2] A census from 1820 seems to reflect their household as in adjacent Grayson County,[3] in which there eight children. We might have wondered if this were really the home of Jesse and Polly Friend, but we find Andrew Friend in this census as well, just we found him with Jesse in Hardin County in 1810. It's not clear what type of moves these families actually made in between, if any.

Polly must have died fairly young, prior to 1821, for in that year Jessie Friend was married to Polly Scott, their both having been widowed.[4] No record of her death or grave site has been located.

Children

Jesse and Polly seem to have had six children. Among them, we know, were:

Documentary Evidence

We begin from the premise that our proband is the Mary Hanks for whom we have a record of marriage to Jesse Friend in 1795.

Dennis Hanks and Charles Friend supplied information to William Herndon through interviews and letters about, in particular, a set of Hanks sisters and their nephew John Hanks, and there has never been doubt that among them was this Mary (Hanks) Friend, who was known as Polly.

In particular, Dennis Hanks wrote:

3d Who Did Jesse friend Mary he Married My ant polly Hanks Abes Mothers ant Thomas Sparow Maried Elizabeth Hanks A Lincolns ant Sister to Henry Sparrows wife Lucy Hanks This is their first Name who Did Levi Hall Mary he Maried My Mother Nancy Hanks which was Lucy Hanks Sister Henry Sparows wife Abes grand Mother I Dont Recollect their farthers Name My grand farther and ther farther I think old John Hanks Can tell who was his grand farther all a Bout it write to him if it is Importent 4 was you Raised By Charles friend or Thomas Sparrow I was Raised By Thom Sparrow[9]

This statement establishes his credibility as having been in intimate contact with these members of his family (though not aware of his grandfather's identity) with sufficient knowledge for him to be able to name his aunts and uncles, among whom he named Polly.

Documentary evidence that the family of Hanks siblings so described were of Joseph Hanks and Ann Lee may be found throughout the other family members' profiles, especially those of Joseph Hanks, Ann Lee and Lucy Hanks (documentation still needs improvement --Maddox-1056)

With respect to Polly's age, extant evidence does not give us an exact date, but by the order in which Joseph named his children in his Will, [citation needed] it seems she was younger than sister Elizabeth, born 1771,[10] and older than sister Nancy. That, along with her marriage date and her age range in the 1810 census, make it highly likely that she was born between 1772 and 1779. Some researchers assert that it was circa 1773, but it is not clear how they arrive at this date.[citation needed]

DNA Evidence

Y-chromosome DNA analysis of descendants of males in this this Kentucky Hanks family, and of descendants of others from North Farnham Parish, Virginia, has confirmed that the males of this family, including Joseph Hanks, Polly's father, shared a common ancestor with other branches of the Hanks family who lived in North Farnham Parish, Virginia: that is to say, yDNA has allowed us to confirm that the Hanks men of our proband's family descend from the same common recent common ancestor as the North Farnham Parish Hankses, but has not been sufficient to confirm the question of by whom specifically they descended.

In October 2015, the results mitochondrial DNA analysis performed by the Hanks Surname DNA Project were announced. See the full announcement here. Kit 45229 came from someone with a claim to a matrilineal grandchild of Davinia Hatfield, who in turn is claimed to be a matrilineal 2nd great-daughter of Mary "Polly" (Hanks) Friend.

The study finds that this kit, along with four others, all found to be of the rare X1c mtDNA group and share three more specific mutations in addition, confirm that the Hanks sisters Lucey (Hanks) Sparrow, Mary "Polly" (Hanks) Friend and Nancy (Hanks) Hall descend from a single mother.[11] More work and more information are required and anticipated soon regarding this exciting development. At this time, it would be reasonable to say that the surname project has announced that has confirmed that Mary Hanks was the sister of Lucy Hanks and Nancy Hanks.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Polly by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Polly:

Hanks-1135 and Hanks-221 appear to represent the same person because: Hanks -1135 appears to be a dupe of Hanks-221. Does anyone managing the Pennsylvania-sourced Hanks family feel she's not a dupe of the version of the North Farnham Parish family?
