Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Francis Hardesty was a Maryland colonist.

Francis Hardesty was the son of Thomas Hardesty and Mary Favell of Hampsthwaite, Yorkshire, England. He was christened on March 10th, 1672.[1]

Francis Hardesty was an early colonial immigrant to Anne Arundel County, Maryland. He has a page on a website dedicated to early Maryland and Virginia colonists.[2]

1703 First Marriage to Ruth Unknown and Two Children

On 13 JAN 1703 in All Hallows Parish, Anne Arundel County, Maryland, he married Ruth, the widow of John Gaither.[3][4][5][6] She had been born about 1662 in Virginia. If those dates are correct, she was 41 at the time. Most trees on ancestry have her maiden name listed as "Ruth Morley." Here is a screenshot from the All Hallows Parish church record, as preserved at the Maryland State Archives and available through their online service:[7]

Francis Hardesty and Ruth Gaither Marriage Record

Francis and Ruth Hardesty had two children, who, again assuming the correctness of the dating, would have been born when Ruth was 42 and 45, respectively:

  1. Rachel Hardesty b: ABT 1704 in All Hallows Parish, Anne Arundel County, Maryland.
  2. Francis Hardesty b: 27 FEB 1707 in All Hallows Parish, Anne Arundel County, Maryland[8][9]

Here is Ruth Gaither Hardesty's burial record, as it appears in the All Hallow's church book. The original is available for viewing thanks to an online repository at the Maryland State Archives.[10]

Burial Record of Ruth Hardesty

Both Rachel and Francis Hardesty were named in Francis Hardisty's probate and estate distribution records. Rachel was specifically named as "Rachel Welch" and "Rachel, wife of Captain John Welsh."

Research Note

In looking at the All Hallow's church book entries, it can be determined that the burial of Ruth Hardesty, wife of Francis, actually happened on the day AFTER his wedding to Dorcas Linthicum:[11] However, the marriage appears in the next column.

1719 Marriage of Francis Hardesty and Dorcas Lincecom

DNA Comparison of Francis Hardesty Descendants

Paternal relationship to Francis Hardesty has been determined by a comparison of the following descendants' DNA: First, Paternal relationship to Francis Hardesty via his son Robert Hardesty Senior was confirmed by a triangulated group consisting of four descendants: Virginia Stephenson Clegg GEDmatch A609811, Edwin Hardesty GEDmatch A339382, Zane Darland GEDmatch A944705 and Jon Williams GEDmatch A052615. Edwin and Virginia share 23.8 cM of DNA on chromosome 18. Zane and Jon each triangulated with Edwin and Virginia on different segments: Edwin, Zane and Virginia share a 9.1 cM segment on Chromosome Number 18 from 68,326,989 to 71,067,174. Virginia descends from Robert's son Robert Hardesty, Edwin descends from Robert's son Thomas, and Zane descends from Robert's son Edmund. Also on chromosome 18, Hardesty descendant Jon Williams GEDmatch A052615 shares 12 cM from 52,994,010 to 59,576,359 with Edwin. Virginia's DNA triangulates into an 8.1 cM piece of this same segment. Next, a comparison with descendants via Francis Hardesty's daughter Rachell Hardesty Welsh, Robert Hardesty's half-sister, confirms that the following Welsh descendants triangulate with this triangulation: N K Watkins, GEDmatch M464627 shares 26.3 cM with Virginia Clegg from 63,025,831 to 73,507,711 and shares 16.1 cM with Edwin Hardesty from 66,771,510 to 72,600,805 on Chromosome 18 and 10.3 cM with Zane Darland on the same segment; Paul Watkins GEDmatch M570205 overlaps with 18.2 cM from 67,469,280 to 73,500,911; Kay Watkins GEDmatch M161619 overlaps with 25.1 cM from 65,025,831 to 73,500,448; and Emily Watkins GEDmatch M559201 overlaps with 18.2 cM from 68,124,411 to 73,905,534; PCWatkins GEDMatch M905100 shares 26.3 cM with Clegg from 63,025,831 to 73,905,534 on Chromosome 18 and similarly overlaps with the other descendants.

Here is a DNA Painter that includes many known descendants of Francis Hardesty. The above triangulated segment can be found in green on chromosome 18:

Hi, it looks like the source reference to Mike Marshall's page was inadvertently deleted:
