William Harding as born about 1718 in Northumberland County, Virginia. Research Notes

Source needed to determine if he was born Hardin or changed his name from Harding like his father. There appear to be no sources for his birth. However, his parents were both living in Northumberland County, Virginia, not Stafford County. The Overwharton Parish Register begins in 1724, five or six years after this William Hardin's birth so no record would exist there.

New evidence is presented in this profile regarding the mother of this William Hardin. Records posted in the record of his father William Harding (abt.1680-1752) show that he married a second time to Frances (Waddington) Robinson, the widow of Richard Robinson and may have had a son and then died in childbirth or shortly thereafter. See that profile for details.

A major problem exists with the references to Ancestry Family Trees. So many errors and guesses exist in them that Wiki-Tree does not consider references to the trees to be reliable. Many of them call this man William Henry Hardin. However no record exist which use both names and middle names were rare to non-existent in the early 1700s. I have removed all references to Ancestry trees because of this problem.

In addition Dorothy Ford Wulfeck's work has proven to be unreliable. She collected material from many individuals as well as copying printed sources. She states that the work is a compilation meant to hold clues and not finished research. Her work is also unreliable and contains many errors.

In creating this post I have relied on original source records that I have personally read and extracted and have given the exact location in the record where the information can be found.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:

Harding-1416 and Hardin-461 appear to represent the same person because: These two men are identical. One is an empty profile imported many years ago. They need to be merged.

Could somebody with more wiki-geni-cred (and family knowledge) explore why the LNAB for this is "Hardin" while the father/brothers are "Harding"?
