William Hardwick was a Maryland colonist.

William Hardwick, son of Thomas Hardwick and Alice UNKNOWN, [1] was born c.1618 [2] and eventually resided in Virginia. [3] [4]

Marriages

He is said to have married Elizabeth Sturman of England in 1654; [2] after Elizabeth's death he married Margaret Pope of Maryland at an unknown time. [5]

Research Notes

  • William Hardidge, connected son of William and his first wife, was apparently born 1643? But they weren't married until 1654, twelve years after his birth? Why so late to marry?
    • William Hardidge could not have been born in 1643. Based on the statement in the 1668 will of William Hardwick that son William was to continue his schooling until he reached age 21, he must have been born after 1647. (1668 - 21 = 1647) A 1654 date is reasonable for son William's birth. (Strutton-11 21:30, 16 August 2021 (UTC))

No source is given for his date of death or the place, both of which were listed in the data above the biography. The marriage source was cited for the date of birth, and the place of birth and death are listed in the biographical data as the same as the place of the marriage.

  • 1618 William Hardwick born to Thomas Hardwick 1589-1640 and Alice of Bristol, Somerset, England.
  • Approximate birthdate is from this deposition: [p. 28, VA Col. • 1645 William Hardwick and Thomas Sturman, (his father-in-law), being Puritans, were involved in the disturbances of Richard Ingle. William Hardwick, who became Lieutenant-Colonel of Militia, married first, Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Sturman, probably before 1650. She seems to have been the mother of his children[6]
  • 1650 William Hardwick, John Sturman et al. signed a petition in Maryland. Apparently soon after this, Hardwick and the Sturmans, and probably also Nathaniel Pope and John Washington moved to Virginia.
  • 1650 William Hardwick, Gent, sold to Richard Sturman, in Westmoreland County, Virginia.

  • 1664 William Hardwick received patent for one hundred acres in Westmoreland County, Virginia.
  • 1665-1668 William Hardwick, his second wife Margaret Pope Hardwick, and his young son William, Jr. returned to England. It appears that his daughter Elizabeth and her husband Robert Wynston were also in England at the time of William's death.[citation needed]
  • 1668 William Hardwick made two wills before he died; one for property in England, and one for property in Virginia. The one for property in Virginia is lost.

Will

The English will - William Hardwick, "late of Nominy, Westmoreland County, Virginia, Gent., and now of Bristol, England," 'made his will October twenty-fourth, 1668, which was probated January eighth, 1669. This will deals with the testator's estate in England and he refers to another of the same date relating to his property in Virginia, which will has not yet been discovered. All the heirs mentioned in the surviving will, seem to be living in England at that time, so far as ascertainable from the will. Possibly there were other heirs in Virginia named in the lost will. The surviving will mentions wife Margaret [Pope], who received 150 pounds on condition of fulfilling certain requests mentioned in the American will regarding the estate in Virginia; sister Elizabeth Boyce; Dorothy Cyle and Mary Penyman (no relationship stated); brother Thomas Hardwick; son William Hardwick, who is to continue his schooling in England until he is twenty-one; daughter Elizabeth Wyuston. He names brother-in-law Mr. Augustine Hull and Cozen Thomas Youle in his will. Overseers of the present will are Thomas Burg.'s. of Bristol, Chirurgon, and son-in-law Robert Wynston. Witnesses are Frances Bell. James Bell, Thomas Boyce. junior. Fulwood. I The executors of the other will undoubtedly lived 'in Virginia. Of these Cozen Thomas Youle was the son of Captain Thomas Ewell, or Youell, who married Anne Sturman, sister to Hardwick's first wife, ihenee he is called Cozen (nephew by marriage). [7]

Hardwick-698 and Hardwick-29 appear to represent the same person because: 698 mentions "Colonel" Hardwick, but clearly meant "Captain" Hardwick, the father. 29 married Margaret "Pop," but the name is "Pope" elsewhere on the page. Not much to go on, but seems clear they both represent the same man.

I agree with Kari and Sheila-- clearly Hardwick-214 and Hardwick-29 are the same person, the only difference being where he was born. The source given for his birth in Virginia is his marriage record-- a DOB, but NO birth location has been parsed out of the source, that I can see. And according to Wikipedia, that area was not yet inhabited by white settlers in 1618.

Hardwick-214 and Hardwick-29 are not ready to be merged because: Does not appear to be the same person according to locations and spouses.
