FREDERICK WILLIAM HARKNESS, Sr., 77 Electrical Engineer

LAKELAND - Mr. Frederick William Harkness, Sr., age 77, died Monday (Nov. 24, 2008) of heart failure. Born in Lansing, MI., on May 3, 1931, he came here from Mansfield, MA., in 1981. He was an electrical engineer with Owen-Illinois, and a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. He graduated from Olivet High School in 1949, and attended Michigan State University. Mr. Harkness accepted the Lord in 1961 and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church since 1984. He loved being in church and was an avid wood worker, providing toys to the Salvation Army and Toys for Tots. Mr. Harness is survived by his wife Norma J. Harkness, Lakeland; sons Frederick Harkness, Jr. and his wife Laureen, Lakeland, Walter Harkness and his wife Jane, Bedford, N.H., Paul Harkness and his wife Amy, Richmond Hills, GA.; daughters, Cheryl Evans and her husband Ron, Morriston, FL., Nancy Naugle, Lakeland, Denise McSweegan, Albion, R.I.; brothers John Harkness, Eaton Rapids, MI., William Harkness, State College, PA., Rex Harkness, Ashford, CT.; sister Patricia Rogers, Salt Lake City, UT.; friends Don Russo, Lakeland, Steven Smith, Albion, R.I.; 16 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, at Lanier Funeral Home Chapel. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, at Calvary Baptist Church. Interment will be in Florida National Cemetery. Contributions may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, Advancing the Future.
