On the 1861 census Jacob was classed as a labourer living at home with his parents. In 1868 his father, Adam sold him the remaining 60 acres of the home farm on L7 C1 of Mariposa twp. for "Love and $1.00"- this being a stipulation that in return for the land, Jacob was to provide his parents with the necessities of life for as long as they should live.
Adam died the following year and a court case ensued between Jacob and his brother, Aaron over the terms of the land agreement. Aaron claiming Jacob had not lived up to the terms of "Love and $1.00". Outcome of the court case is not known.
In 1871, Jacob & his family were farming in Uxbrdge Twp, Ontario co. On the next census the family was living in Port Perry and Jacob was said to be a labourer. In 1901 Jacob was a "day labourer" in the town of Barrie in Simcoe county.
