William married Mariah in 1865 and they had a son, Westley. When Mariah remarried to John Fishburn in 1875, we took it for granted that William had died after the 1871 census. However, we have now discovered a marriage for a "William Harman" in Michigan in 1873 that appears to be the same man. Two facts lead to this conclusion: first, at the time of the 1873 marriage, he gives his birth place as "Aurora, Canada West" and secondly, on his death registration his father is named "Joseph". We will continue to look for more information but I think this is enough to add this second marriage and the subsequent census notes.
Whether this second marriage was legitimate or bigamist is another question. I'm not certain if it was even possible to get a divorce in Canada in those days.
