Jack was born to Zelemma Corley and Jasper Harper in Crowville, LA. His mom died when he was about 2 years of age, and his father, with older children, asked for and got help from a community church. As it happens, Jack's future wife's family, I.Y. And Mary Orell Lanier, childless at the time, took Jack into their home and kept him until sometime after Minnie's birth. My grandmother (Orell) said my father was in love with my mother from the minute she was born, sitting and holding her (though only 4), singing to her, etc. After Jasper remarried, he took Jack home. My dad said his older sister Elsie was more the mother he'd never really known, but he maintained close relations with Orell and with his older sister Lennie.*
Jack Enlisted in the he US Air Force on 1 Oct 1945 at Camp Shelby, Forest, MS.
