Various internet trees give him the compound name 'John Augustin' but I have found no primary source that backs this up. In censuses and in his widow's estate records, he is always either Augustus or Augustine.
His daughter Mahala gives his birth place as Virginia on the 1880 census, the only source for his place of birth.
There is an Augustus (indexed as Augustin) age 20-30 in the 1840 Macon co. AL census. This may be an adult son.
