Biography

"Daniel was born about 1701 and died 10 Jul 1770. He married #1 Margaret Cravens, sister of Robert Cravens. He married #2 Sarah Stephenson, widow of William.

Daniel Harrison, (1701-1770), the eldest child of Isaiah Harrison, and his second wife, Abigail, according to a deposition made by him the 14th December, 1767 (see page 144 of Settler's by the Long Grey Trail (LGT) cited below which covers the Harrison family extensively), gave his age at this time as 66-7 years. Thus he was born in 1701-2; the latter date placing him in his 66th year in 1767. His birthplace was either Oyster Bay, or Smithtown, Long Island, New York, most probably the former; his father having remarried about two years prior to the spring of 1702, the time of his removal from the first the second named point. Daniel died testate in present Rockingham County, Virginia, July 10th 1770. His will signed June 8, 1767, and proven, August 25, 1770, follows: (end of page)"

LGT, pg 191-194: Chapt. XII: "Daniel Harrison's childhood was passed at Smithtown, Long Island. The year of his birth (1701), Capt. William Kidd, of pirate fame, came to the close of his meteoric career, and no doubt the young children of Daniel's day were highly entertained with many a story of the bold Captain, and of buried treasure on Long island."

"In 1721, Daniel Harrison migrated with his father, Isaiah, to Sussex County, Delaware. There May 8th 1730 after his first marriage, he purchased 75 acres of land which had belonged to his half brother, Gideon Harrison, who had died the year before."

Daniel's first survey of land was Dec 8, 1738. This was one of the surveys in the following Record; "Settlers by the Long Grey Trail", First Settlers in the Region of Harrisonburg:

"The earliest surveys found are dated as follows; for Daniel Harrison, December 8, 1738; for Thomas Harrison, December 28, 1739; for John Harrison, Sr., November 12, 1740; for Jeremiah Harrison, Nov 13, 1740 and for Samuel Harrison, November 14 1740, the last four surveys being recorded in the old surveyors' book at Winchester."

Daniel was later granted on August 20th a patent of a second tract of land in Old Augusta County; at which time his son, Robert, was also granted a patent of land. Daniel's original tract was on Naked Creek and was in what was then Augusta County, south of the line that divided this territory from Rockingham. In the 1741 patent granted to the Harrisons, the grant to Daniel included 400 acres on teh Dry Fork of Smiths Creek, and Roberts was for 206 acres along the fork on his father's land. In all, Daniel harrison and his sons were granted some 4,294 acres of Augusta County lands in seventeen patents. All of these with the exception of three to Daniel himself. Will of Daniel Harrison (Daniell Harrisson)

"In the Name of God Amen--the eighth day of June in the Year of our lord one thousand seven hundred and sixty seven, I, Daniel Harrison in the County of Augusta and Colony of Virginia being in Reasonable health & Perfect mind and Memory thanks be Given to God therefore Calling to Mind the Mortality of the Body & knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament;

That is to say Principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul unto the hands of God that gave it and for my Body I recommend it to the earth to be buried in a Christian and decent manner at the discretion of my Executors nothing doubting that at the General Resurrection I shall receive the same again by the Mighty Power of God and touching such worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to Bless me with in this life I give devise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form viz.

Imprimis I give and bequeath first to my beloved Wife, two Negroes one called Hannah and the other called Simon, during her Widowhood; next again I leave her my dwelling house and the store house kitchen and all the rest of the the buildings with a third part of the Plantation during her life with a third part of the stock and household furniture.

Secondly I give and bequeath unto Sarah Stevenson my Wife's daughter one good bed and furniture and young Breeding Mare.

Thirdly I leave and bequeath unto my son Benjamin Harrison, my youngest son, all my home Plantation with Mill and Still at my wife's decease or marriage he paying unto the rest of my Children thirty Pounds to be equally divided amongst the rest of my Children.

And all the out lands that I now posess to be sold and when all my just debts are paid the Residue or Remainder of said Money to be equally divided and the remaining two thirds of my stock to be sold at Publick Vendue equally divided. (public venue)

And my Negroes, Cesar Kate and Moses, to be sold at Publick Vendue to be equally divided amongst my Children and the two Negroes, Hannah and Simon that I left unto my Wife till her decease or Marriage to be sold at Publick Vendue & equally divided amongst my Children

And I do hereby utterly disannul disallow and revoke all and every other former Wills legavies request or anything whatsoever Relating to a Will any ways named or Bequeathed.

Ratifying Confirming this and no other then to be my last will and Testament In Witness hereof I have hereunto sett my hand and seal the day and year above interlineation was made.

"Settlers by the Long Grey Trail" tells us : "Daniel's first wife, and the mother of his children, was Margaret Cravens, whom he married about 1724, or shortly before this time. She was a sister of Robert Cravens, who had previously married Daniel's half-sister, Mary, very soon after the Harrisons' removal to Delaware."

Children of Captain Daniel and Margaret Harrison were Robert, Daniel Jr, Jesse b. 1729; Mary b. 1733; Jane 1735; Col. Benjamin Harrison b. 1741.

Between the will of Capt. Daniel Harrison and the will of his son, Robert Harrison, all the children of Capt Harrison are named.

Capt. Daniel Harrison, Thomas, and Jeremiah Harrison were brothers and the four were brothers-in-law to Robert Cravens, through their sister, Mary Harrison, his wife.

Altogether, Daniel Harrison and his sons were granted some 4,294 acres of Augusta County Lands in seventeen patents--all but three of these being issued to Daniel Himself, as follows: To Daniel Harrison: 22 Sep 1739, 400 Acres, E. draft of W. On 25 Sep 1746 the survey of the Fairfax Line was started. Besides grants to Daniel, there were grants to his nephew, John Harrison, Jr for 1566 acres and his brother Samuel, 200 acres. On 26th patents for 200 granted to 245 and Thomas 212. glw

The Disposal of the last parcel of "Maiden Plantation"

In the following deed below, is the last of the series in the disposal of "Maiden Plantation", close to the time of the death of Isaiah Harrison.
