Note
Note: "William C. Harter, the subject of this sketch, left his home at the age of fourteen years, after which he lived in various towns, clerking in stores until attaining the age of twenty-six years, when he returned to farm life, and has since followed agricultural pursuits. In his boyhood he received but a limited education, attending the rude log cabin subscription school of that early date. Mr. Harter was married August 19, 1852, to Mary B. Williams, a daughter of George Williams, deceased. Seven children were born to them, five of whom are still living -- Charles W., Lucy B., Benjamin T., Hattie T. and George W. A daughter, Allie, died at the age of fifteen years. Mrs. Harter was at one time a popular teacher in the county, where she taught three years. Mr. Harter settled on his present farm in March, 1860, where he has 220 acres of fine land. In connection with his general farming he devotes considerable attention to stock raising, making a specialty of short-horn cattle and Cleveland Bay and Royal George horses (imported). In politics he is a Republican, Mrs, Harter is a member of the Universalist church."
