Jack was raised on Cucumber Creek in Stanly County, North Carolina. He enlisted in the Confererate Army on 13 September 1862. In Volumn 4, page 72, Index to Moore's Roster, he is listed as 1st Corporal J. J. Hartsell, Company I, Regiment 64.
