Biography

Josiah Hartwell was born on 11 Sep 1717 in Concord, Massachusetts,[1] the son of Jonathan Hartwell and Hannah Blanchard.[2][3]

Josiah married first to Bethiah Wood about 1742 in Littleton, Massachusetts.[4] They had the following children, all born in Littleton, Massachusetts:

  • Joseph, b.2 Feb 1742, d.1812 (Revolutionary War, Captain);
  • Sarah, b.24 Sep 1744, d.3 Jan 1783, m.Melvin 1764;[5]
  • John, b.23 Jan 1746, d.28 Mar 1825 (Revolutionary War);[4]
  • Bethiah, b.25 Jan 1748;
  • Benjamin, b.4 Nov 1750, d.1813 (Revolutionary War);
  • Elisabeth, b.24 Sep 1752, d.12 May 1754;
  • Samuel, b.25 Nov 1754, d.1833 (Revolutionary War);
  • Daniel, b.23 Nov 1756, d.25 Sep 1836 (Revolutionary War);[4]
  • Thomas, b.1 Jan 1759, d.23 Jun 1761;
  • Thomas (Dr.), b.13 Nov 1761, d.10 Dec 1809;[4]
  • Simon, b.12 Dec 1763, d.27 Jan 1815;[4]
  • Elizabeth "Betsy", b.22 Sep 1765, d.9 Dec 1831.

Bethiah died in 1776 and John married, as his second wife, Hannah Haskell Willard in Jan 1777 (records differ - marriage date could be 4th, 5th or 15th) in Littleton or Harvard, Massachusetts.[1][2][6] On 10 Jun 1777, Hannah was referred to as Hannah Hartwell in a deed.[1][7]

Josiah died on 20 Jan 1790/91 in Littleton, Massachusetts[1][2][8] and was buried at the Old Burying Ground, Littleton, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts.[4] His will was filed in 1791 in Middlesex Co., Massachusetts.[9]
