Research Notes

Vital Statistics

Many of her vital statistics (e.g. date of birth, place of birth, date of death, place of death, marriages and dates of marriages) are unsourced.

Marriages

Rebecca marriages are inferred from the 1779 marriage of Jane Harvey to John Gillespie. On 5 August 1779, Simon and Rebecca Gillaspie gave their consent for Jane Harvey to marry Simon's brother John.[2] This consent suggests Simon and Rebecca were Jane's mother and step-father.

  • Need more exact citation to the marriage of John Gillespie and Jane Harvey.

John Gililspy & Jane Harvey Marriage

The "Marriages" research note above does not match the marriage register record[3] as to the details of the marrage record. The record (image available in the citation) lists:

Date of Bond: 13 August 1779
Husband: John Gillispy
Wife: Jane Harvey
Parents or Guardian of Husband: Simon and Rebeccah Gillespy - consent of
Parents of Guardian of Wife: [none listed]
Security and Witnesses: Michael Wooley

The record says John is the son of Simon and Rebeccah. It does not say Jane is the step-daughter of Simon and the daughter of Rebeccah. That they gave their consent implies John was less than 21 years of age at the time.

[need to find the contemporaneous marriage record as the register may have been compiled at a later date]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Rebecca by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Rebecca:

The assumptions regarding marriages needs to be reassessed in light of the marriage register record of John Gillispy & Jane Harvey, which appears to have been misinterpreted. Need to determine whether that record is contemporaneous, or a later transcription?

Thank you for the link! Already found several other Gillespy items of interest in the pages nearby.

The register appears to be an accurate transcription of these two documents, and appears to confirm John Gillespy is not the son of William Gillespie and Mary Glendinning as currently (27 May 2022) shown.

The research note regarding Simon and Rebecah could perhaps be modified, as the consent does not speak to their relationship to Jane Harvey. Is there a marriage record for Simon and Rebecah?

Carruthers-1338 and Carruthers-1026 appear to represent the same person because: from the biographies, these are the same person
