Biography

William Harwood born 28 Mar 1665, in Boston, MA [1] to Nathaniel Harwood Elizabeth Unknown. (Elizabeth's maiden name was Barron.)[2]

Williams father Nathaniel, came to New England from London, [3] where he married Williams mother Elizabeth Barron. They moved to Concord Ma after 1665, settled and started their family. Nathaniel was a cordwainer by trade, he made freeman 21 Mar, 1690. Williams father passed 7 Feb, 1716 and his mother 25 Apr, 1715.

Marriage and Family

William married Esther Perry, May 11, 1692 and settled in Dunstable, a town partly in MA. and partly in New Hampshire.

Esther born Aug 11, 1674, [4] daughter of Obadiah Perry (1640-1691) and Esther Hassell (1648-1692). William, was a worthy man, a valued citizen, and was elected to office on many occasions. [5]

Children

William and Esther had ten children together. [6]

  • Elizabeth Harwood , born 1694, married John Barker 25 Nov, 1708. Her husband passed around 1739 and she remarried and is now Elizabeth French.
  • Esther, born 1696, married Joseph Barker 26 Aug, 1725. She also remarried and is now Esther Morse.
  • John, born 1699, at Concord, MA. [7] He served as a soldier in Lovewell's third expedition against the Indians, he was killed at Pigwacket (in Fryeburg, Me.), in "Lovewell's Fight," May 8, 1725.

An old ballad commemorates this fight, and gives to Ensign John Harwood.

The Inscription Reads:

To mark the field of Lovewell's Fight on the 8th day of May 1725 between a company of Massachusetts rangers of 34 men and 30 warriors of the Pequawket Tribe led by Paugus in a contest lasting from early morning until after sunset. The Indians were repulsed and their chief killed.


To the memory of :

Capt. John Lovewell of Dunstable, Lieut. Jonathan Robbins of Dunstable, Ensign John Harwood of Dunstable, Rober Usher of Dunstable, Serjt. Jacob Fullam of Weston, Jacob Farrar of Concord, Josiah Davis of Concord, Thomas Woods of Groton, Daniel Woods of Groton, John Jefts of Groton, Icabod Johnson of Woburn, Jonathan Kittredge of Billerica. These 12 killed on the field of battle were found and buried by Col. Tyng.

Lieut. Josiah Farwell of Dunstable; Jonathan Frye, Chaplain of Andover; Elias Barron of Groton were wounded and died by the way. 9 others were wounded.

The survivors led by Ensign Seth Wyman began the homeward march after midnight.

Erected by the Society of Colonial Wars in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts 17th June 1904.

  • Thomas, born 1706, at Dunstable, MA. Married Abigail. He was a prominent citizen of Dunstable.
  • Sarah Harwood, born 1706, at Dunstable, MA. Married Deacon William Cummings. They had two sons and two daughters. Deacon Cummings was a soldier under Lovewell. He died at Hudson, N.H., Aug. 29, 1757.
  • Mary Harwood, born 1709, at Dunstable, MA. [8] Married Thomas Pollard, of Dunstable.
  • Abigail, born 1710, at Dunstable, MA. Married Jacob Hildredth , Oct. 18, 1730.
  • Rachel, born July 21, 1712, at Dunstable, Mass. Married a Mr. Barnes.
  • Dorcas, born Mar. 6, 1717, at Dunstable, Mass. Died Dec. 11, 1723.


Death

William died Sept. 17, 1740 [9], and his will was probated Oct. 9, 1740. William is buried at Old Dunstable Cemetery Nashua, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire.
