Disambiguation: There were two men named Jeremiah Hatch living in 1691 in Scituate. The younger Jeremiah Hatch, born in Scituate in 1660, is the son of this Jeremiah Hatch.[1]

Biography

  • On December 29,1657 Mary Hewes married Jeremiah Hatch at Scituate, Massachusetts. [2]
  • Son of Thomas Hatch (ca Jun 1596-bef 14 Jun 1646) & Lydia Gyles (-aft 1665), in Scituate, MA. Born ca 1626 in Wye, Ashford, Kent.
  • Jeremiah was baptized in Wye, Ashford, Kent, on 23 Jul 1626. [3] He died ca 1712 in Scituate, MA. Occupation: ship builder.
  • Jeremiah “was an active citizen, selectman, rep. 1675, 1676, 1679, and 1680.” He “was often deputy to the general court; was surveyor, selectman, and prominent in town affairs. He owned a large amount of land, granted him by town of Scituate.”
  • He settled near Walter Hatch with whom he was engaged in ship building for many years. He was often a deputy to Colony Court, a surveyor, and selectman.
  • In 1674 William Hatch and Jeremiah Hatch were fined for refusing to serve as constables.

In 1702, he is mentioned in his sister, Mary Fisher's will.[4]

Jeremiah Hatch's will was witnessed on February 21, 1703 by Benjamin Woodworth, Isaac Ring and John Daman and was submitted to probate in March, 1712/3. In it he names the following: [5][6]

  • Mary my xxxx?
  • my said wife
  • son James
  • daughter Joanna Wing
  • daughter Anna Smith

  • daughter Deborah
  • my son ?xxxx
  • (crossed out) five children of my daughter Mary ?xxdy
  • my five grandchildren their mother's part with the rest of my children [5]

On March 16, 1712/3, James Torrey submitted testimony, that about 3 years prior, Jeremiah Hatch now deceased, in the presence of his wife Mary, ordered James Torrey to cancel or obliterate the first 3 lines of the second page of his will. [5] His inventory was taken on 12 March 1712/13.[7]

On the same date, Jeremiah Hatch, executor of his father's estate, submitted that the inventory of the estate, submitted by James Torrey and Joseph Bryant was a true and accurate inventory. [5]

On March 22, 1712/3, widow Mary Hatch made oath that she was present when her late husband ordered James Torrey to cancel lines in his will which James did. She further stated that the five children referred to were the children of Mary Eda, wife of Joseph Eda of Swanzy (sic). [5]

Their children include:

  • Mary Hatch (14 Feb 1658-bef 1701)

Hatch-4853 and Hatch-236 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth year, same daughter, no other info on -4853. please merge.

That's what I thought - Elizabeth married Hatch. The date IS odd. No date was included in the narrative part. Don't know if it was dated by a witness or what. But it was obviously written several years before his death, by the 1712 testimony that he had a section crossed out in about 1709.

LOL -- I take it back. She's a Hatch who married a Hatch. So Elizabeth Hatch (the real one, b. 1668) in a 1703 will looks just the same as Elizabeth Hatch before her 1699 marriage to Israel Hatch.

The 1703 date for the will, if correct, is still a problem even with Cudworth out of the picture... because daughter Elizabeth is shown as m. to Israel Hatch in July of 1699. The position of that date, to the side, seems unusual, so I am wondering if it's something other than the date when the will was actually composed? Written earlier, but not witnessed until 1703??

PS I darkened the print on the will, before uploading. Maybe someone can help decipher some of the names.

His will appears to be witnessed on Feb 21, 1703, daughter Elizabeth was named Elizabeth 'Hatch' on this date so she wouldn't have been married to Cudworth in the 1690's.

... and the Bethia b. on that date, 31 March 1661 (FamilySearch has 1662) is shown (on both FS and NEHGS) as a daughter of _Walter_ Hatch, not Jeremiah. Unless others have concerns, I'll detach her from Jeremiah and make sure she appears among Walter's children. Marriage record also found at Freetown, but with "[Betty Hatch]" as bride, in brackets.

Chris -- yes -- that's the "real" Elizabeth -- and there's also a Bethia shown b. or bp. on that date given for the first Elizabeth -- but I'm not finding a hint of any marriage, under either given name, to a Cudworth. See comments & bio on the profile for Elizabeth #1/Bethia, Elizabeth Hatch. (Am wondering if Bethia may be a child who died very young; with Elizabeth as "replacement" child given a variation on the same name?)

... and I now think dau. Elizabeth (Hatch) Cudworth is suspect; she's not in the Scituate VRs, and that birth date is questionable. Will look into this when I have a moment. ... Correction: she's there, but as "Bethia"; it's a church record, so presumably a baptism. If both this record, and the one for Jerimiah, Jr., are christenings, that explains the short 7-month gap.
