Biography

Richard Hathaway alias Gardner lived in Shottery, a small village about a mile west of the market town of Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire. He was a husbandman.[1]

He was probably the son of the John Hathaway who was recorded as holding copyhold land in Shottery at the time of the Warwickshire Survey in the reign of Philip and Mary. The land was held by copy of the Court Roll dated 1542 (34 Henry VIII).[2]

He was known as Richard Hathaway alias Gardner, or sometimes just Richard Hathaway or Richard Gardner. The origin of this alias is not known and was used by John Hathaway of Stottery before him.[3]

He had at least nine children. The parish registers of Holy Trinity, Stratford began in 1558 and record the baptisms of all except the two eldest children. Their names were:

  1. Bartholomew, eldest son[1]
  2. Anne or Agnes, born about 1556[1]
  3. Richard, baptised 4 January 1561/2 ("Richardus filius Richardi Hathaway als Gardner")[4]
  4. Catherine, baptised 22 October 1563 ("Caterina filia Richardij Hathaway als Gardner")[5][1]
  5. Joan, baptised 9 May 1566 ("Johanna filia Richardi Hathaway als Gardner de Shotery")[6]
  6. Thomas, baptised 12 April 1569 (“Thomas the sonne of Richard Hathaway”)[7][1]
  7. Margaret, baptised 17 August 1572 ("Margaret Daughter to [blank] Gardner of Shotrey")[8][1]
  8. John, baptised 3 February 1574/5 (“John son to Richard Hathaway”)[9][1]
  9. William, baptised 30 November 1578 (“William sonne to Richard Hathaway of Shottrey”)[10][1]

In 1581 his wife was Joan. It has been assumed that she was his second wife and that his first wife died sometime after giving birth to their daughter Catherine in 1563. There is no evidence to support this theory, other than the baptism of a daughter Joan in 1566, which is assumed to be his wife Joan's first child.[3]

He was buried on 7 September 1581 at Holy Trinity, Stratford.[11]

He left a will dated 1 September 1581.[1] His will was proved by his widow Joan in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury on 9 July 1582.[12][13] A transcript of his will is here.

Richard Hathaway of Shottery in the parish of Stratford on Avon, Warwickshire England had his will drawn up on 5 Sep 1581. He described himself as a husbandman. [14] He made bequests to:

  • son Thomas
  • son John
  • son William
  • daughter Agnes
  • daughter Catherine (1563)
  • daughter Margaret
  • wife Joan
  • son Bartholomew

He requested burial at Stratford on Avon, Warwickshire and his wishes were carried out on 7 Sep 1581. [15]

Hathway-26 and Hathaway-1625 appear to represent the same person because: Duplicate profile - merging to most commonly known variation of LNAB. Cheers!
