Jeptha was born in 1740. [1] Jeptha Hawley married Easter Castle [2] of Woodbury, Dec. 26, 1762.[3] He passed away in 1813. [4]
Captain Jeptha Hawley UE (1740-1813), was a Seven Years’ War veteran and captained a bateaux brigade under Burgoyne.
His first wife Esther Castle died in 1782 at Sorel, Quebec, after the family had been forced to leave their American home when the British were defeated. It is possible that Esther died in childbirth or shortly after, since her last child Sarah was born that year.
Jeptha married second widow Rachel Mallory Lockwood in 1782 and became stepfather to her young children.
In 1784 [he] settled in Ernestown. Jeptha built what is considered the oldest house in the Bay of Quinte area and, as a lay preacher, convinced senior Kingston clergy to bring Rev. Langhorn to the area. Additions to his home provided a home for Rev. Langhorn.[5]
1797: Marriage of Benjamin Fairfield and Nabby Hawley Lockwood-3592 (both of Ernestown) officiated by Rev. John Langhorn of the Anglican Diocese on 11 April 1797. Witnesses: Jeptha Hawley, Davis Hawley, Sheldon Hawley, [groom's brother] Jonathan Fairfield.
