James Hayes, son of Dudley Hayes and Elizabeth Wood, was born on the 9th of February 1822 in Shefford. He was baptized on the 20th of October 1822 with his siblings, Nancy and Stephen.[1] James married Charity Mitchell of Stukely Township on the 6th of April 1857. James and Charity had 6 children from this marriage.[2]
In the 1901 census, James (age 79) is living in Shefford Quebec with the following, all born in Quebec:
Charity Hayes, Wife, age 71
Betsy Mitchel, Sister-in-law, age 64
Alice G. Hayes, Daughter, age 37

The transcription of the 1901 census gives his place of birth as 'Qc' (Quebec City?).
There is an 1871 census record for James Hayes, also living in Shefford, Quebec, that gives 'Ireland' as the place of birth. [3]
