Title: History of Spartanburg County
Author: by Landrum, J. B. O. (John Belton O'Neall)
Published: in 1900 by Atlanta, Ga., The Franklin prtg. and pub. co.
Excerpts from pages 406-407:
James Turner, Sr., migrated from Virginia with his father to South Carolina before the Revohition, when he was only twelve years of age. He was the only child of his mother, whose maiden name was Hannah Middleton. He had reached the age of manhood when the Revolution broke out, and was in the service of his country.
His father (whose first name we have been unable to obtain) settled on Pacolet River near Coulter's Ford, and raised by a second wife three sons and three daughters, viz. : Henry, Richard, Samuel, Phebe (Mrs. Solomon Abbott), Sallie (Mrs. Ephraim Potter), and Betty (Mrs. Wm. Garrett).
James Turner, Sr., married Margaret Heydon, and had nine children, viz. : Edward, William, Samuel, Middleton, James, Mary, Ann (Mrs. James Foster), Elizabeth and Tamer. His home was on Pacolet River, near Coulter's Ford, where his father settled.
James Turner, Sr., was a brother-in-law to Horse Shoe Robinson, the hero of Mr. Kenedy's famous novel of the same name, both of whom were scouts during the Revolution and a terror to the Tories.
Some time after the close of the Revolution James Turner, accompanied by his little son Samuel, visited Horse Shoe Robinson, who resided in what was then Pendleton District, S. C.
