Biography

The daughter of Nicholas and Mary (Propst) Heavner, Phebe was born in Pendleton County, West Virginia, about 1807 or 1808 per the 1850 and 1860 census records respectively. A sister born in 1807 makes 1808 more likely.

In about 1815, Phebe moved with her family from Pendleton County, West Virginia, to what became Upshur County, West Virginia. Her father bought 400 acres there from George Jackson.

In 1826, Phebe had a child (Randolph Jackson) by George Jackson's unmarried nephew, Jacob Jay Jackson. Randolph was acknowledged by his father and later named in his will, though given far less than his legitimate children.

In 1828, Phebe married Kinsey Ward and in 1830, they had one male child under five in their household, presumably Randolph Jackson. That child is otherwise unknown to Ward descendants. On Randolph's death in 1909, Phebe Heavner Ward's three surviving children were named as siblings in Randolph's obituary. Autosomal DNA segments shared between Randolph Jackson's descendants and those of Kinsey Ward, up to 105 cMs, triangulate with the Heavner and Propst families of Pendleton County, West Virginia.

By Kinsey Ward, Phebe Heavner had John B Ward; Martin Van Buren Ward; Melvina Ward married Foster Hinkle; Martha Ann Ward married Marion Lantz; Nelson R Ward; and Barbara Ellen Ward married Stephen Watson Reynolds.

Phebe Heavner Ward died sometime around 1863, probably in Barbour County, West Virginia. No gravestone has been found.
