Biography

Johann Nicholaus Heibst was born on March 8, 1727, in Bingen am Rhein, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. He married Apollinia Abigail Wamser on 20 Oct 1767 in New Hanover, Montgomery, Pennsylvania. He died in April 1802 in Botetourt, Virginia, having lived a long life of 75 years.

Johann Nicolus Heibst was b. 3-8-1728 near Bingen, Germany. The family came to what was Nicholas. Hypes ws born in Germany March 8, 1728 and died in Botetourt County, Virginia in March 1802. Nicolaus and Apolonia moved to Botetourt before June of 1775 where he bought 400 acres between Fincastle and Buchanan. Nicolaus and Apolonia md. 10-20-1767 in New Hanover, PA. Nicolaus was paying taxes in Botetourt by 1784, where he managed a pig iron works near Pattonsburg, now known as Buchanan. Nicolaus also owned 700-800 acres of land near Winchester, VA. Nicholas was also a wagon maker and built wagons for the continental Army during the Revolution. Nicolaus d. by 4-1802 in Botetourt. His will was dated 3-1-1802 and it mentioned his wife, Apolonia and the following children: John, Peter, Henry, Maria, Elizabeth - md.___Able, Barbary, Magdaline - md. Jacob Gross, and Margaret. The estate was not settled until 7 years after Apolonia died (1833), in 1840. Nicolaus signed his will using the German spelling of Heibst. Some of the Hypes family settled in the Sinking Creek Valley, according to one of the Giles Co., VA History Books, it states thefollowing: By the late 1860's desc. of John and Henry had adopted the Hypes spelling and Henry moved to Ohio in 1811, John to Giles Co. (now Craig Co.) around 1822 and Peter remained in Botetourt.
