Jacob was born on August 9, 1854 in the village of Neudorf in the Glückstal district of the Odessa area and Black Sea region of South Russia to Jacob Helm and Carolina (Schauer) Helm. He was the second of their 11 children. Jacob was baptized on August 15, 1854.[1]
