Biography

Martin was born in 26 June 1907 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. He was the son of C. L. Helms and Lula Phillips.[1]

In October 1940 when Martin signed a WWII Registration Card, he was decribed as 190 pounds at 5'10" with grey eyes, brown hair, and a ruddy complexion. He indicated that he was married and worked for himself.[2] By the time he applied for a Social Security number in Jan 1941, he identified himself as an unemployed sharecropper.[1]

He died on 13 October 1985 at the home of his daughter in Union County, North Carolina.[3][4]

Research Notes

  • The spelling of his middle name is either Lukrain[1][2] or Lucrene.[3] I have chosen to use the spelling found on the earliest records in the data fields. - McGee-1611 12:26, 11 July 2017 (EDT)

Martin was taught a valuable lesson at about 10 years old by his own grandmother, Caroline Hinson (if you're counting, that would be my 2xgreat-grandmother). The family was together for dinner after church. When it came time for dessert, she asked my grandfather if he would like a piece of cake. Being a fairly typical pre-teen, his response was "I don't care." She very promptly replied, "Well if you don't care, neither do I!" and moved on to the next person without any further discussion. He never forgot her response and often retold the story when his grandchildren used those words.
