Biography

Martin was born in 26 June 1907 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. He was the son of C. L. Helms and Lula Phillips.^[1]

In October 1940 when Martin signed a WWII Registration Card, he was decribed as 190 pounds at 5'10" with grey eyes, brown hair, and a ruddy complexion. He indicated that he was married and worked for himself.^[2] By the time he applied for a Social Security number in Jan 1941, he identified himself as an unemployed sharecropper.^[1]

He died on 13 October 1985 at the home of his daughter in Union County, North Carolina.^[3][4]
