Biography

Isabella was born on 19 Aug 1861 in the Old Town of Stonehaven in the parish of Dunnottar, Kincardineshire, Scotland.^[1]

In 1871, age 9, she lived with her mother and four siblings Jane C. (age 11), Janet S. (7), Agnes W. (4) and James (2) in Stonehaven.^[2] Also present in the household was her cousin Jane BRAKENRIDGE (14). Isabella's father was away at the time, on board the ship Braes O' Moray at Wemyss, Fife.^[3]

On 25 Aug 1879, age 18, she married Alexander FINLAYSON, a Blacksmith aged 27, at Merchiston Hall in Falkirk.^[4]. Her occupation was given as Shopwoman [it's possible she worked in her father's fish merchant business]. The usual residence for both bride and groom was given as Larbert.

In 1881, age 19, she lived with her husband Alexander and their daughter Agnes at the Old Manse in Larbert, Stirlingshire, Scotland.^[5]. Also present in the household was Isabella's first cousin Georgina Ligertwood WOOD, a 23 year old Dressmaker. The old manse (which dates from 1635) lies on Denny Road beside the churchyard of Larbert Old Parish Church.^[6]

In 1891, age 29, she lived with her husband and four children Isabella (age 9), Alexander (7), James (3) and Jane (1) in the hamlet of South Broomage in the parish of Larbert.^[7]

In 1901, age 39, she lived with her husband and seven children in the hamlet of North Broomage in the parish of Larbert.^[8]

On 3 Nov 1903, age 41, she passed away in her home on Victoria Road in Larbert.^[9] Cause of death was given as Endocarditis; Mitral Stenosis & Incompetence; Pulmonary Apoplexy.

A memorial inscription on a headstone in Larbert Old Parish Churchyard reads: "Erected by Alexander Finlayson ILMO his wife Isabella Henderson d. 3 Nov 1903 aged 42y. Also their daughters Agnes Wilson d. 23 Feb 1884 aged 4y, Annie Gray d. 7 Sep 1887 aged 2y, Isabella Wood d. 5 Nov 1909 aged 27. The above Alexander Finlayson d. 11 Dec 1909 aged 57y."^[10]
