Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Ursula (Henderson) Reid was a Virginia colonist.

There are no primary sources for Ursula's maiden name, date or location of birth, marriage to Daniel Williams, or death; but there are several researcher assumptions for all of the above.

Ursula's place of birth is variously reported as New Kent County (which seems most likely if she were born in the Colonies), Hanover County (which wasn't established until 1719 from New Kent County), or even less likely, Lunenburg County (which wasn't established until 1746 from Brunswick County, which wasn't established until 1720).

Daniel and Ursula are on record in Hanover County (north of Richmond) in 1735, Halifax County (on the NC border) in 1751, Louisa County (NW of Richmond) in 1756, and Granville County, NC (adjacent to Halifax Co. VA) in 1757 [1]

Biography by Jouett Taylor Prisley:

Ursula's family name is much contended. J. E. Williams, a former dean at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Va Tech), in his unpublished account of the family, claimed she was a Clark. At least one other (from which we get Ursula's marriage date of 19 Oct 1732 in Hanover Co.), states Ursula was the daughter of Thomas Henderson and Ursula Keeling. [2]

The theory of several family researchers is that she was Ursula Duke, daughter of Col. Henry Duke, early landowner of extensive properties in New Kent/Hanover counties of Virginia. Witness the traditional naming of their first born son Henry, as if for a grandfather. Witness the further fact that this son Henry had named a daughter (his will, Caswell County NC, 1786) Ursley Duke. But to go back to the Clark possibility, he may have been a Henry.

Whatever the family background of Ursula, and whatever the future of those of Daniel and Ursula's children who left few tracks, two of their sons -- John and his brother James -- made a mark in their country's history and in their heritage. It is worth noting that even when various sources agree on the children of this couple, there are at least three different sets of dates attributed for their births, none varying more than three years, usually on the earlier side given here.

Ursula and Daniel's children were:

  1. Marya Marie Williams, b. 26 Jul 1733, m. Benjamin Goodman
  2. Henry Williams, b. 03 Nov 1734
  3. John Williams, b. 04 Nov 1737, d. aft. 24 Sep 1794
  4. James Williams, b. 10 Nov 1740, m. Mary Wallace, d. 08 Oct 1780
  5. Joseph Williams, b. 06 Sep 1742
  6. Mary Williams, b. 30 May 1745 m. (1) Isaac Mitchell m. (2) John T. Satterwhite, Sr.
  7. Daniel Jr Williams, b. 02 Jul 1747

When Ursula married Joseph Reid on 19 Dec 1761 her son-in-law, Benjamin Goodman served as best man. Thomas Lowe and Thomas Conti were witnesses. Note that in this document the groom's surname is spelled Read.

Ursula inherited five slaves from her husband: Will, Sue, Hester, Judy and Harry
