Biography

Birth and Parents

Elizabeth Ann Hendrick was born to Luther Calvin Hendrick and Mary Ellen Miller, on November 28th, 1854, in Breckinridge County, Kentucky.[1]

The Hendrick family and Miller family were neighbors and close friends, both farming the land and growing mainly the cash crop, tobacco. Luther's father, Calvin, had also married a Miller; Nancy Hendrick Miller, daughter of early Kentucky settler, Christopher L. Miller, a friend of Luther's father, Robert Hendrick.

Mary Ellen Miller, Elizabeth's mother, was the daughter of yet another Miller, Michael Miller who married Matilda Ellen Ball, daughter of John Ball and Nancy Withers. Michael Miller was Nancy Miller Hendrick's brother. Another one of Christopher Miller's sons, Barnett Miller, married Judith Hendrick, daughter of Robert Hendrick and sister of Luther's father, Calvin.

Elizabeth Ann, who the family called 'Bettie', had five brothers and sisters:

  1. Thomas Calvin Hendrick, b. 1851.
  2. Elmina Jane Hendrick Jolly, b. 1856.
  3. Noble Warfield Hendrick, b. 1859.
  4. America A. Hendrick Morton, b. 1861.
  5. Michael Miller, b. 1863.

Elizabeth married Lewis Miller, a first cousin, once removed. Lewis' father and Elizabeth's mother's father were brothers and sons of Christley Miller of Breckinridge County.

The wedding was on April 10, 1872 in Cloverport, Kentucky, where they both lived. Lewis and Elizabeth were farmers like their parents. During their marriage they had eleven children:

  1. Hester Ann Miller Smith b. 1873 m. William Robert Smith.
  2. Alfred Luther Miller, b. 1875
  3. Chlora Thomas Miller Stiffler, b. 1877 m. Omer James Stiffler.
  4. Edward Lewis Miller, b. 1880 d. at the age of 26.
  5. Warfield Hendrick Miller, b. 1882 m. Katherine Harriett Fenn.
  6. Eliza Mildred Miller Comstock, b. 1884 m. Wilbur Bert Henry Comstock.
  7. Michael Miller, b. 1886 d. 1887.
  8. Virgil Scott Miller, b. 1888 d. 1956 m. Jessie Jewell Heath.
  9. Raymond Lewis Miller, b. 1890 m. Edna Bobbie Cornet.
  10. Ruth Haynes Miller Shawhan, b. 1892 m. Leslie Lyon Shawhan.
  11. Pearl Towsy Miller Georgopoulos, b. 1895 m. Steve Georgopoulos.

By 1910, the family had already relocated to Hutchinson, Kansas. This was a big move on their part as the family had been apart of Cloverport, Kentucky, for a few generations. Six of the children were still living at home, four of them over 20 years old. Alfred, the oldest was working in the wholsale produce business. Virgil was a Superintendant at the Model Cleaners and two of his sisters, Chlora and Eliza were working for him.[2]

In 1918, Lewis Miller died at the age of 73. He was buried at the Eastside Cemetery in Hutchinson, Kansas. Elizabeth Ann Hendrick Miller died on June 28, 1941, at the age of 88. She is buried beside her husband, Lewis, at the Eastside Cemetery, in Hutchinson Kansas.[3]
