I believe William was born in Cherokee Nation East, North Carolina, USA, not Scotland. His ancestors arrived from the Netherlands. He did marry Susannah Sokinney, sometimes know as Susannah Harnage, a full blood Cherokee. I believe the Ambrose Harnage family of Long Swamp Creek, GA. unofficially adopted her. In an 1830's census, William was mistaken to be Cherokee, but he was a white man.
