Biography

Carl Friedrich Henkel was born on 4 Mar 1827 in Wenigentaft, Buttlar, Wartburgkreis, Thüringen, the son of Caspar Henkel and Elizabeth Dittmar. [1]

Carl arrived in New York from Bremen on the ship Lion on 30 Sep 1848. He was travelling with his brothers Wilhelm (16) and Franz (14). The ship's passenger list noted they were farmers from Wenigendaft. Also listed near them on the list, and also from Wenigendaft were 32 year old Elizabeth Vogel and 41 year old Wilhelm Krops. The passenger list appears to list his age as 20 1/2, but he was actually 21 at the time. [2]

In 1850 he was a 24 year old laborer, living in New York Ward 9 District 2, New York, New York, with his mother Elizabeth and siblings Francis, William and Franklin. [3]

He married Josepha Wolk. They had at least seven children together:

  1. Charles A. Henkel (1856-)
  2. Adelaide Henkel (1859-1879)
  3. William J Henkel (1860-1893)
  4. Frank J Henkel (1865-abt.1930)
  5. George E. Henkel (1866-1939)
  6. Louis Henkel (abt.1870-1900)
  7. John Henry Henkel (1872-1946)

In 1860 he was a 33 year old Cooper, living in Jersey City, Hudson, New Jersey with his wife Josephine and children Charles (4) and Lenna (1). [4]

In 1870 he was 43 years old, ran a "Lager Beer Salloon" and lived in New York Ward 16 District 2, New York, New York with his wife Josephine, children Charles (15), Adeline (13), William (10), Francis (7), George (3), and Lewis (1), and Margaret Ohlman, a domestic servant and Anton Bohn, an 18 year old Bar Keeper. [5]

He applied for a United States passport, which was issued on 18 Oct 1870. It described him as being 5'7" tall, with a medium forehead, blue eyes, straight nose, medium mouth, round chin, blond hair, ruddy complexion and a round face. [6] He must have travelled soon afterwards, because he arrived in New York from Bremen on the ship Hansa on 19 Dec 1870. [7]

In 1880 he was a 53 year old Saloon Keeper, living in Jersey City, Hudson, New Jersey with his wife Josephine, and children Charles (24), William (20), Frank (17), George (15), Lewis (10), Harry (8), and niece Ada Henkel (15). [8]

In 1900 he was a 74 year old widowed Saloon Keeper (born Mar 1826, according to the census), living in Jersey City Ward 11, Hudson, New Jersey with his sons George (33) and Louis (32) and nephew William Henkel (17). The census noted that he arrived in the US in 1848. [9]

He died on 20 Mar 1904 in Morris Plains, Morris, New Jersey.

Research Notes

  • His passport application gave his birth as 6 Mar 1827 in Wenigendaft[6]
  • This profile previously showed his birth on 6 Mar 1827 in Wenigumstadt, Aschaffenburg, Bayern, but Wenigentaft is a better fit for his birthplace on his passport application (one letter off, d vs t) and the birth date is within two days (reasonable for an American immigrant in that era) and the parents match this profile, and the mother's first name matches the 1850 census
