Biography

Lorien Edwin Hennigar was born on the 11th of June 1869 in Vinton, Iowa.[1] He was the son of Allen (Hennegir) Hennager and Eliza Goodwin. Lorien lived with his family in Dayton, Iowa in 1880.[2] At age fifteen he not only worked the farm with his father and brother Almon (age 16); he attended school with his siblings Orlando, Mary, Ida, Lola and Violet.[2] Nora, age two, stayed home with his mother.[2]

Lorien married Miss Ada Craig on the 4th of July 1891 in Butler, Iowa.[3][4] Their first son, Arthur, was born in November of 1892.[5] Lorien and Ada had three more children over the next eight years.[5] At the turn of the century Lorien was living in Charles City, Iowa. He was working as a Day Laborer, as were a number of his neighbors.[5] Lorien rented the home he lived in and could both read and write.[5] Ada, age twenty-five, stayed home and took care of the family.[5] Arthur (7) and Clifford (6) attended school.[5] Clyde was just nine months old[5] and Henry would not join the family for another month.

In 1910, at the age of forty-three, Lorien was renting a farm in Cedar, Floyd, Iowa.[6] Ada, at thirty-three, took care of the home and family.[6] Arthur, now seventeen, did not work on the farm.[6] Clifford (14) and Irving (10) most likely attended school.[6] Layton, at age four, would have stayed home with Ada.[6] Clyde was no longer with them, but was not listed as a deceased child on the census record.[6] Ten years later, at the age of fifty-two, Lorien was working as a Machinist for the Rail Road.[7] His sons Clifford (23) and Irving (19) also worked for the Rail Road.[7] Clifford was a Boiler Maker while Irving worked as a Fireman.[7] Vera was just six years old and attended school.[7] Tragedy had struck the family as young Layton died in 1914 at the age of eight.[8]

Lorien was sixty-two in 1930 and living on First Avenue East in Williston, North Dakota.[9] He was renting his home and worked as a Machinist Helper for the Steam Rail Road shop.[9] Ada was fifty-one and took care of the home and family. Their daughters Vera (16) and Opal (12) attended school.[9] Lorien finally retired and in 1940 was living on Sixth Street West in Williston.[10] His income was listed as 'other'[10] and most likely was his retirement. His wife Ada had reached the age of sixty-three.[10] Their daughter Opal (22) was married and living with them with her two children William (2) and Robert (1).[10] Luanka Howe, a widow, was listed as a Lodger in their home with her income also as 'other.'[10] The year before Lorien and Ada had visited his nephew Harold Earl (the son of Valeria (Hennigar) Earl), in Wilmot, South Dakota.[11] Lorien and Ada celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary at their son Clifford's home in Mason City, Iowa.[4] At that time three of their children and their adopted daughter were still living, and they had twenty-seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.[4]

Lorien's daughter-in-law, Arthur's wife Hazel, died on the 16th of August 1947.[12] She had been ill for six weeks prior and finally succumbed.[12] Hazel was fifty-three years old.[12] Funeral services were held at a Methodist church in Mason City.[12] Attending were Lorien and Ada, Mrs Sandstrom, Mr and Mrs Wayne Hennigar, Lorien's son Cliff Hennigar and family, PFC Hollis Hennigar, Marie Titus and Mrs Joseph Titus, Mr and Mrs Louis Cartwright, Lorien's daughter Mrs Opal Jacobsen, and Lorien's son Mr and Mrs Irving Hennigar.[12] The pallbearers were Hazel's sons Elwood, Wayne, Joseph, Glen, Stanley and Donald Hennigar.[12]

Lorien and Ada visited family on more than one occasion, including the visit to see Clifford in 1952.[13] Loren and Ada 'of Wilson, North Dakota' accompanied Clifford to visit Mr & Mrs R. Van Gorder in Nashua.[13] Mr Van Gorder was a cousin of Ada's.[13] Lorien would have been eighty-three that year, and Ada seventy-six.

Loren died on the 28th of October 1953 at the age of eighty-eight.[1] His wife Ada died in 1972 at the age of ninety-five.[14]

Surname Variations

  • This surname has been seen spelled a variety of ways, including Hennager, Hennigar, Henniger, Hennecker, Hennegen, Henneger, Hennegir and others. Due to early illiteracy and a heavy German accent in some older ancestors each generation (and sometimes each individual person) needs to be assessed for the spelling used as Last Name At Birth and Current Last Name. Vital records take precedence, even if they don't contain the 'true spelling' (because there is no one spelling).

  • Paternal relationship is confirmed by a triangulated group on GEDmatch consisting of Mindy Silva, Dennis Werda, and Shelly (Gullette) Slade, who share a 13.4 cM segment on chromosome 11 from 188510 to 134445626. Mindy and Dennis are 3C2R; Mindy and Shelly are 5C; Dennis and Shelly are 4C1R. The MRCAs of Mindy, Dennis and Shelly are Daniel Allen Hennagir and Elizabeth (DeLong) Hennagir, the 4th great grandparents of Mindy and Shelly, and the 5th great grandparents of Dennis.
