Around 1750, Louis and Madeleine settled at Isle Saint-Jean (present-day Prince Edward Island) like many other Acadians from the Colony of Nova Scotia. "A drastic change occurred in 1749 when a sudden shift in British policy with regard to Nova Scotia triggered a wave of immigration to the Island. Protestant settlers loyal to the British crown were brought to Nova Scotia, new fortifications were raised including the Halifax citadel and the Acadians were pressed into taking an unconditional oath of allegiance to the English Monarch or else be expelled from their lands. Many Acadians living in Beaubassin, Pisiquid, Grand-Pré and Port-Royal became concerned about their safety and moved to the Island. Within five years the population of the colony jumped from 735 to 2,223. It is estimated that another 1,500 Acadians took refuge on the Island in 1755 -- the year the Deportation began on the mainland. " [2]They were listed in the Island's census in 1752 at Rivière-de-l'Ouest. Louis, age 30, a ploughman, and Madeleine age 25, had 2 young girls Marguerite and Hélène. They owned land and farm animals. [3]
The family was deported to France in 1758 with thousands of Acadians.
They disembarked at St-Malo, France on 23 January 1759 with their children Anne Josèphe, Pélagie and Pierre. Charles, age 5, died at sea during the crossing.[4]
Madeleine died in St-Servan France on 28 March 1759 at about age 32.
Marriage (2) Anne Thibodaux, widow of Charles Pitre, on 7 August 1759 at Pleurtuit, ancient province of Bretagne (present-day département of Ille-et-Vilaine).[5][1]
