Biography

Sir Walter Herbert of Caldicot[1]

Walter Herbert was the son of Sir William Herbert, Earl of Pembroke (died 1469) and his wife Anne, daughter of Walter Devereaux,[1] who were married in 1459.[2] Anne's mother was Elizabeth Merbury.[3]
Walter married Anne, daughter of Humphrey Stafford of Buckingham. They had no children. By his mistress, Elizabeth Lany, Walter had three children:
  • Elsbeth Herbert, married William ap John
  • Thomas Herbert, married Brigit ferch Tos Kemeys
  • Watkin Herbert of Tidenham
Elizabeth was the daughter of Maurice Lany of Magor and his wife Mawd ferch Philip ap Thomas.[4]
Walter died 16 September 1507 in Herefordshire, England.[citation needed]

Note: Citation needed for birth in 1440, which does not mesh with marriage of his parents in 1459 (DWB). The Wikipedia article on his father (William Herbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke) lists him as the second son, born c1452, with his older brother, William Herbert, born 5 March 1451. (The article on older brother William in DWB has his birth in 1460. Richardson has William and Ann Devereux's marriage as "about 1455" and son William born about 1458 ("age 13 in 1471").[5]

1st Earl of Pembroke, Black William was his father's title...

Hi Scott! Could you check your records for birth/death dates and mother? Herbert-477 has same dates, but mother as Anne Devereux (DWB says William and Anne married in 1459).

I've set them as an unmerged match. It may be that William had a son named Walter by both his wife & his mistress & the dates are wrong for one of them.

Thanks!

need sources for birth/death dates and mother (DWB says William and Anne married in 1459); profile for Walter, son of William & Maud Turberville, has same dates.
