Biography

Mathew Herbert, Esq., son and heir of Sir George Herbert by his wife Elizabeth,[1] the daughter of Sir Thomas Berkeley, was born in Wales.[2]

Mathew married "Mary, daughter of Sir Thomas Gamage, Knight, and died in 1596. There is a monument to his memory in the Church of St. John, Cardiff."[3] Their first son, William, was born about 1539.[4]

Mathew Herbert held Candleston Castle after his father Sir George Herbert. When Mathew died, his son William Herbert succeeded him. Upon Sir William's death in 1609, Candleston Castle passed to his brother, Sir John Herbert, who died in 1617.[5]

In addition to sons William and John (who held Candleston Castle after William),[5] another son, Nicholas, was born about 1543[6] or 1552 (he married Mary Morgan circa 1575).[2] Matthew Herbert and his wife Mary (Gamage) also had a daughter, Elizabeth.[7]

Research Notes

Estimated Dates: Birth "about 1515" and marriage "before 1539" are based on first son's birth in 1539 (see son William Herbert's biography, History of Parliament Online).
The History of Parliament Online has vitals for their sons & their daughter's son that don't align with a 1548 marriage date for them, which is frequently given as their marriage date:
  • William b c. 1539[4]
  • John b 1540[8]
  • Nicholas b 1543[6]
  • Elizabeth's son Thomas Jones, b February 1554/5,[9]

a dbe about Elizabeth (Herbert) Johnes/Jones led to a genealogics page about the family. The only new info was about her brother, John:
1 sibling
+1. Herbert, Elsbeth, d. 10 Aug 1571
+2. Herbert, of Neath Abbey, John, b. 1550, Abaty Castell Nedd d. Abt 1617 (Age 67 years)

No sources though, and does not agree with source for him on Herbert-581:

sorry - that last post wasn't clear. The birth years of the children are from the History of Parliament Online. The (I think incorrect) marriage in 1548 is from ORTNACAC.

I think the marriage date is probably 1538, which would legitimize their sons born 1539, 1540, and 1543 (from History of Parliament Online). Our Royal, Titled,... footnotes Richardson following the 1548 date (see Mathew's entry - http://our-royal-titled-noble-and-commoner-ancestors.com/p2496.htm#i75013 ), but all I can find in Richardson is that Mary Gamage married Matthew Herbert - no date. I don't know where the 1548 date is from, but I don't think it can right not only because it would make it impossible for Elizabeth's son to be born in 1553/4, but because Matthew & Mary's sons are born before that date, according to History of Parliament Online (ORTNACAC doesn't cite source for birth year of Matthew or son Nicholas, so both may be guesses based on 1548... which I can't verify)
