William Herndon was born February 29, 1764, in Albemarle county, Virginia. During the American Revolutionary war, William served as a Private, in Culpeper county, Virginia, under the command of Colonel James Slaughter. There, he met and married Mary Rucker, a daughter of Thomas Rucker, Jr. The descendants of their children have become members of the Society of the DAR under both her father's and her husband's records. William Herndon died before August 12, 1847, in Greene county, Virginia. Their children of record include James Herndon, who married Esther Ferneyhough; Edward Herndon, who married Mary Bradley; Ezekiel Herndon, who married Sarah Jones; and Elizabeth Herndon, who married Benjamin P. Cason. [1]

Married on 30 Nov. 1762 in Culpeper County, Virginia. Their home was in Madison County when this was formed in 1793.
1. James Gaines Herndon. Born 29 Feb. 1764, twin of #2, in Albemarle County, Va. He was in the Culpeper County Militia in Jan. 1781, in Class 83 commanded by Capt. Reuben Beale. He married Mary ----. On 27 Oct. 1785 he purchased 100 acres in Orange County, Va., from Richard Land. He and Mary sold this land to his brother Joel Herndon of Madison County. They then moved to Elbert County, Georgia, where two of his brothers had already moved. They had two children. After the death of Mary, James was married second in 1814 to Sarah Thornton. They had a daughter mentioned in the 1820 Census, but no further information is available. He died before his father made his will on 9 Jan. 1822.
2. William Pendleton Herndon. Born 29 Feb. 1764, twin of #1. At age 17 he was enrolled in the Culpeper County Militia in Class 94 commanded by Capt. Ambrose Bohannon. He married Mary Rucker (b. 2 Mar. 176_; d. 26 Feb. 1835), daughter of Thomas & Elizabeth Rucker. They had thirteen children. His will was dated 28 Aug 1845 and recorded 12 August1847.
3. Benjamin Herndon. Born 9 May 1765 in Culpeper County. He was married there on 20 Nov. 1787 to Susannah Ahart (b. 8 July 1769; d. 12 June 1835, Elbert Co.), daughter of Abraham Ahart. 4 They had five children. About 1793 Benjamin, his wife, and the three oldest children moved from Orange County, Virginia, to Elbert County, Georgia. He died in Elbert County on 12 April 1805 leaving a will dated 18 Sept. 1804 and registered 23 April 1805.
4. Edward Herndon. Born 6 May 1768. He was married in Culpeper County on 18 August 1791 to Nancy Rucker (b. 8 May 1768; d. 11 April 1845), daughter of Thomas Rucker of Madison County and sister of Mary Rucker who married #2. They had twelve children. They lived on a plantation on Beaver Dam Creek in Elbert County. He died on 22 Sept. 1827.
5. Rachel Herndon. She was married first in Orange County on 19 August 1790 to Jeremiah White. Jr., son of Capt. Jeremiah White. She married second a Hawkins. She had children, but their names are unknown.
6. Nancy Herndon. She was married in Madison County on 17 August 1793 to William Jordan. They had children. but their names are unknown.
7. John Herndon. Born about 1770 in Orange County. He was married in Madison County on5 Nov. 1795 to Elizabeth Wood, daughter of James Wood. His name was on the tax rolls of Madison County, Va., until at least 1813. By 1823 he and his family had settled in Madison County, Kentucky. They had at least two daughters.
8. Elizabeth Herndon. Born 1776. She was -married in Madison County on 24 Dec. 1797 to Richard Jerrell. They had children.
9. George Herndon. Born 12 April 1779. He was married in Madison County on 31 July 1799 to Elizabeth Zachary (d. 20 July 1847). They had eleven children. They moved from Madison County, Virginia, to Richmond, Madison County, Kentucky, in 1813. They moved to Cooper County, Missouri, on 18 Nov. 1831. He died at the residence of Susan Herndon, widow of his son Benjamin Zachary Herndon, in Cooper County, Missouri, on 20 Dec. 1874, aged 95 years.
10. Henry Herndon. Born about 1782, twin of #11. He married Lucinda Wood in Orange County. They had three children (Her-899) and lived in Madison County, Virginia. In 1860, his widow Lucinda lived next door to their son Dr. Bartley P. Herndon in Salt Spring Township, Randolph County, Missouri.
11. Joel Herndon. Born about 1782, twin of #10. He was married in Madison County on 23 Dec. 1805 to Lucy Quinn (b. 1783). They had five children. They settled in Greene County, Va., after 1819. In 1843 and 1850 he served as surety for his son, Benjamin, who had been elected Constable. His estate was appraised on 10 Oct. 1854 in Greene County.
12. Mary Herndon. She was married in Madison County on 19 Jan. 1809 to John Jackson, Jr.
