Biography

Birth

Hans Georg Hertzel was born on Jul 8, 1714, in Reihen, Kurfürstentum Pfalz, Herrschaft Venningen, Heiliges Römisches Reich, to parents Hans Georg Hertzel and [[Conradt-[1]2|Anna Conradt]]. Reihen was under a condominium of Herrschaft Venningen and Kurfürstentum Pfalz.

Immigration

In 1727, Hans Georg Hertzel immigrated with his parents, Hans Jerg Hertzel and Anna Margaretha Conradt Hertzel, and siblings Johan Dieterich, John Leonhardt, Hans Jacob, and Anna Margaretha Hertzel to Pennsylvania.[2]

"John" along with part of his family "...emigrated from Germany by way of Rotterdam on the ship "William and Sarah"((William Hill, Master) sailing from the Eppigen region of the Palatinate (located on a tributary of the Neckar River))[3], landing in Philadelphia September 21, 1727."[4]

Hans (John) George Hertzel Jr.(1007) was born July 7, 1714 in Reihen, Baden, Germany. He died on January 1, 1767 in Pennsylvania.(1006) Alternate death date of 21 Jan 1762, Easton, Northampton, Pa on CD Ancestral File Feb 94. This date is also given in "Kansas Pioneers".(book cited below)
John emigrated from Germany by way of Rotterdam on the ship "William and Sarah", landing in Philadelphia on September 21, 1727.

Marriage

Hans Georg Hertzel married Catherine Schmetzer in 1735.[5]

On September 20, 1737 he received a purchase warrant for 200 acres of land on "Applebutter Road" (adjoining that of his father) located in Lower Saucon Township, then Bucks County and now Northampton County, Pennsylvania (other relatives settled adjoining tracts). He would use the land for farming and to live upon; raising a family, as the purchase took place the same year he married Catherina Schmetzer (b.1713) in Lehigh, Pennsylvania. Together the couple would have at least eight known children.

Children

In 1747 the congregation (?) was meeting at "Herzel's", presumably at the dwelling of George. In 1756 when the Lower Saucon Reformed Church books were opened, he entered the names and births[6] of all his children°:
  1. Magdalena
  2. Anna Christina (Eva)
  3. John
  4. Maria Margaretha
  5. Friedrich
  6. John Adam
  7. John George
  8. Susanna Catharine

[7]

Death

Hans Georg Hertzel died on Jan 21, 1762. He drowned at Easton.[8]

We know John wrote his will (in German) on February 21, 1757 and he lived about one month shy of a decade after writing it. On January 1, 1767 both John and a Mr. Geoge Heckman were drowned by the town of Easton, probably as they attempted to cross the Lehigh River under bad conditions.
He was buried in Lower Saucon Reformed Church Cemetery, Easton Road, Hellertown, Pennsylvania.
The Hertzel family continued to live on the farm for about six years until the youngest child married.
On February 1, 1769, son-in-law Jacob Gross agreed to take over the plantation for 400 pounds. The estate was sold off and John, the oldest biological son of Elizabeth and John Hertzell, bought most of the farm equipment and some animals while other sons-in-law purchased the majority of the remaining items. The total from the personal property of the estate was 638 pounds, 7 shillings, 4 pence.(Citation needed).

° The quoted text on the page listed two additional children, Mary Magdalene and Nathan, neither of which appear on his list to the church now on other documents yet surface but they could have died at a young age or perhaps been left off for another reason. Becky Elizabeth

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Hello All:

I noticed several Suggestions but wanted to make a note here of any changes I made so they can easily be re-instated if the data is corrected or if anyone feels the suggestion was an error. Thanks! Becky Elizabeth

This was both a missing SPAN ID and a duplicate source/SPAN plus the "source" has a note stating it "doesn't work" so I felt removing it and knocking out both suggestions would be okay- (everything below is copied and pasted verbatim):
  • Duplicate Source / SPAN ID (copy still on page):
* Source: <span id='S1736'>S1736</span> Abbreviation: Genealogies of Pennsylvania Families from the Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine. Volume I: Arnold-Hertzel Title: Genealogies of Pennsylvania Families from the Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine. • Here is another with one still in the bio:

  • I found reference to a book Kansas Pioneers but nothing cited and did a search for the family names, book title and dates and came up with:
  • Genealogical Society, Topeka. Kansas Pioneers. 1st ed. Topeka, Kansas: The Topeka Genealogical Society, 1976.
* (I searched 3 pages of results and couldn't find any author, editor, compiler etc. Only the Topeka Genealogical Society who happened to have published it so I was unsure how to list the author in any format but Chicago style seemed easiest.

Hartzel-26 and Hertzel-74 appear to represent the same person because: Same person; Name was spelled Hertzell on Philadelphia passenger list

Hans Georg Hertzel Jr. and Hans George Hartzel Jr. appear to be the same person. They both have the same name. "Hartzel" was often spelled "Hertzel," in the sources. They also both appear to have the same spouse and father. They also share birth and death dates, as well as death location.

Hartzell-8 and Hertzel-74 appear to represent the same person because: It appears that these are the same person with different speellings. That happens from time to time. I feel that Hartzall-8 should be merged into Herztel-74 because I have found the great majority of data found for this person to be spelled Hertzel. The name Hartzell-8 has minor discrepancies in the death information. Please read careful because there are several different spellings of the last name through different members of the family.

Hartzell-8 and Hertzel-30 appear to represent the same person because: Same parents, same birthday, likely same person

There are numerous George Hartzells in records. The George Hartzell from Karen Bittinger is not the grandfather of Winifred Hartzell Kovacik. Would be interested to know your branch of family.
