Jonathan Hicks was born on April 16, 1780 in Sackville, New Brunswick.[1] He was the son of Josiah Hicks and Lydia Finney. He married Elizabeth Wry about 1804.
In 1851, Jonathan and Elizabeth were living on a farm in Midgic, New Brunswick. Their household was listed on the census as:
Jonathan Hicks, 70, Farmer
Elizabeth (wife), 71
John, 31
Jerusha Hicks (wife), 27
Ann, 8
Louisa, 4
William, 30
It is presumed that William was the son of Jonathan & Elizabeth, but this is not confirmed.
In 1861, Jonathan was a widower living in Midgic. Several of his adult children lived with or near him, along with their families. From the 1861 census:
Jonathan, 81, farmer prop.
Judson, son, 24
Tracy E, wife, 31
4 grandchildren
Jonathan Hicks, son, 41, farmer prop.
Julia A, wife, 38
6 grandchildren
Nathaniel, son, 47, farmer prop.
Gemima, wife, 44
11 grandchildren
Edward, son, 27, farmer prop.
Elizabeth, wife, 24
1 grandchild
It is not clear whether these 31 people lived in the same dwelling, or in separate dwellings.
Jonathan died on January 9, 1862 and was buried in the Midgic Cemetery.[2]
Research Notes
Many sources group 2 families together as is Jonathon had 2 wives at the same time. He did marry Elizabeth Wry in 1905 and the lived together until her death in 1859. Maria, Moriah, Jane, Sears or Unknown married John Hicks in 1828. She was widowed by 1861 and included in the same census and Johnathon and Elizabeth. This is not the same family.
