Descendant of Mayflower passengers William Brewster, Stephen Hopkins, and Thomas Rogers.

Deacon Jonathan Higgins was born on April 10, 1734 in Eastham, Massachusetts Bay Colony son of Captain Thomas Higgins Sr and Abigail (Paine) Higgins.

Jonathan was a resident of the North Precinct of Eastham, which is now the town of Wellfleet. He was a deacon of the church in Wellfleet.

As a selectman of Eastham he signed the account of the town for the care of an indigent stranger and the petition to the county court for reimbursement 6 Apr. 1767. [1]

Jonathan (43) married Bethiah Snow (28) on 10 Jun 1777 in Wellfleet, Massachusetts. Their children were:

  1. Nathaniel Snow Higgins
  2. Benjamin Higgins
  3. Edward Higgins
  4. Henry Higgins.

Jonathan (50) married Eunice Horton (28) on 9 Mar 1785 in Eastham. Their children were:

  1. Bethiah (Higgins) Swett
  2. Ezekiel Higgins
  3. Sarah (Higgins) Wiley
  4. Elnathan Higgins
  5. Olive (Higgins) Kemp
  6. Hannah Horton (Higgins) Lombard.

At the 1790 census Jonathan had a family of eleven.

In the 1798 tax list Jonathan owned two dwellings in Wellfleet worth $25 and 34 acres of land worth $181. On the other list for Wellfleet he is listed as having a dwelling worth $240.[2]

1798 Direct Tax

In 1820, Jonathan was living in Wellfleet.

Jonathan died on 10 January 10, 1821 in Wellfleet aged 86.

The distribution of his estate was made 11 July 1821 and apparently everything was given to his son Elnathan. [3]

I suspect that Sarah Coombs was a first wife of this Jonathan Higgins as they named a son Paine after his mother and "the heirs of Pain Higins" were mentioned in the distribution of this Jonathan's estate in 1821.
