Biography

Beriah Higgens was born on 29 September 1661 in Eastham, Barnstable County, (then) Plymouth Colony, the son of Jonathan and Elizabeth (Rogers) Higgins.[1][2][3]

Joseph2 Rogers willed to his grandson Benjah Higgens the land in Pamet (now Eastham) on 02 January 1677. A few days before he died, Joseph said that Beriah Higgins lived with him a great while and in consequence should receive some additional personal property, and witnesses attested to his statement on 05 March 1677/8. It should be noted that on Joseph's will his grandson's name is first written as Benajah, crossed out, and interlined is the name Benjah.[4][5][3]

Beriah's wife's name is unknown, but he would have married before the birth of his son Joseph, or before 1697. Joseph sold land in 1718, and so must have been age 21 at the time, and born before 1697.[3]

Beriah was a mariner and lived in or near Dover and Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He received a grant of 50 acres in Dover in 1693/4. In 1696/7 he bought land in Porstmouth from Samuel Cutt. In a deed dated 27 April 1699, Elianor Cutt, executrix of Samuel Cutt deceased, deeded land bounded by land of Beriah Higgins, deceased.[3]

Joseph Higgins in Eastham, mariner, on 30 May 1718 sold land in Portsmouth, New Hampshire which his father Beriah Higgins bought of Samuel Cutt late of Portsmouth, and on 13 Jan 1726/7, Joseph Higgins of Eastham sold his right title and interest in a 50 acre grant in Dover "made to my father Beriah Higgins now deceased and descending to me."[3]

In various records Beriah is referred to as Briah, Bryan, Brian and Bryant.[3]
