Biography

Excerpt from his biography:'[1]

William Hill, jun'r, 71 Cumberland Street, was born on lot 5, concession 1, west of Yonge Street in 1816. His grandfather, Thomas Hill, and his father, William Hill, emigrated from Somersetshire, England, in 1793, and landed at St. John, New Brunswick, with Governor Simcoe. They arrived at Little York in 1794 and pitched their tents on the west side of the River Don, the place being then marked by three Indian wigwams. In 1803 his grandfather removed from Little York to lot 15, concession 1, York Township, and afterwards located on lot 5, west of Yonge Street, where his grandfather and father died. His father left at his death six sons and six daughters. The subject of this sketch came to Toronto in 1839 and worked at his trade of carpenter. He married in 1836, Margaret Cathcart, daughter of the late Alexander Cathcart, of York Township.

He was a carpenter. To Toronto in 1839

In 1836, William Hill married Margaret Cathcart, the daughter of a prosperous farmer. William met his future wife when he attended a military camp meeting. William arrived that morning, riding on a beautiful white horse. While eating breakfast that morning, William sat next to a young girl named Margaret Cathcart. It was the custom of the time that if a girl allowed a young man to sit next to her, then she found him agreeable--and if she left a portion of her food on the plate and allowed the man to eat it, then she was very agreeable. Soon thereafter, William invited Margaret to his home, and his courtship led to a marriage later that same year.[2]

Marriage: 3 Nov 1836

They had 5 children between 1840 and 1847:

  1. William Alex (1840-1926) m Sarah Anna Hilll (1844-1916); 10 children
  2. Robert John Alfred (1843-1895) m1 Jane Wright (1847-1881); 5 children, m2 Maria Grace/Grice-Moore, widow, daughter of Joseph and Isabella Grice, born in Manchester England (1864- )
  3. Cathcart Charles (1845-1874) m Mary Jane Gerry (1845- ); 2 children
  4. Catherine Margaret (1847-1881 ) twin of Adelaide , m James Grimore (1845- ); 4 children
  5. Adelaide Jane (1847- ) twin of Catherine, m David La Frances from Bay City.

William Aleaxander Albert Hill, their oldest child, married Sarah Anna Hill in 1867--that was when two Hills joined.[3]

Research Notes

In the 1851 census of Canada, the records for the town of Toronto did not survive. In the 1861 census of Canada, the records for the township of Yorkville, Toronto did not survive. Thus, William Hill Jr does not appear on either of these two censuses.

There is a Michigan death record for a William Hill (1816-1899), who died in Au Gres. He is listed as a US citizen, a widower, and his parents are William and Florence. Although the citizenship and mother don't fit to the person represented by this profile, Au Gres is a tiny place that had a population of about 300 people. Perhaps this is the father of William Alexander Hill?

The "Memories" section of Sarah's FamilySearch profile has posted .pdf full-text versions of "When One Hill Meets Another"
