The December 1928 issue of the National Geographic Society Quarterly magazine states that Rev. Baptist Minister

William Hill, Jr., (1737-92) was a Patriot Baptist Minister and member of the Committee for Safety for Salisbury District, NC. He was born in Caroline County, VA.

Following from; http://rancho.pancho.pagesperso-orange.fr/Revhill.htm The book "Reminiscences & Memories of North Carolinans" by John H. Wheeler describes Rev. Military

William Hill represented Surry County in the North Carolina Provincial Congress at Hillsborough that convened on 20 August 1775. (Colonial Records of North Carolina, Vol. X, pages 164-168). At this Congress he was also appointed as lieutenant to serve in one of the two regiments this Congress voted to form, but there is no other evidence that he served in this capacity. William Hill was a patriot Baptist minister who served as a chaplain to the American forces at the Battle of Guilford Court House on 15 March 1781. (Soldiers and Patriots in the Battle of Guilford Court House, by Rachel Caldwell Chapter, NSDAR)

Family History

Reverend William Hill and his family came to live in Townfork Settlement in Surry County, North Carolina. Here some information on life there and in those days. Information on his family follows.

"Surry County was formed, in 1770, from Rowan County; which until this date comprehended a large portion of Western North Carolina, from beyond the Yadkin to the Mississippi River. It derives its name from the County of Surry in the south of England. Its name is Saxon, and signifies 'the South River'."

According to an article on Rev. William Hill's son William from The Standard of Raleigh dated November 4, 1857 by Hill cousin Rich Fischer. Rev. William Hill removed from Caroline County, Va. was a Baptist minister, a sterling patriot and an honest man. During the war of the Revolution his stirring appeals stimulated the Whigs of his section. He was a chaplain in the American army at the battle of Guilford Court House. His son William was then about eight years old, and he well recollected hearing the roar of the artillery being only four miles distant from the field of battle. --the maiden name of his wife, the mother of the subject of this memoir, was Eliza Halbert. She was a native of Caroline County, Va."

I am looking for a grandson of William Hill who could be the father of John Hill-720, born 1786. Big John-30338 is a candidate for father except his son named John was born much later. I have many small DNA matches to William Hill-1449, but am missing a generation. I will look again for William's brothers.

Hill-47544 and Hill-1449 appear to represent the same person because: these William Hills match (same dates/wife/parents, albeit duplicates) - see the merge proposal for the duplicate profiles of his mother. The profiles attached for father are also not the same profile; and the profiles attached as children for both of these (Hill-47544 & Hill-1449) need research - dates and places have the family moving an awful lot.

Hill-16290 and Hill-1449 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth date/location. Same death date/location. Same spouse. Same children. Please merge. Thank you.
How do we know that we have the correct William, Jr as the son of William & Susanna Smithers Hill? A good paper trail and YDNA Results. There is a William that matches the YDNA of William HIll, husband of Susannah Smithers. This William was born c.1742 an died 1785, if paper trail is correct. The Group # this William, Jr is under is Group 12c. William HIll husband of Susannah Smithers' seems to be connecting with those in Group !2a,b & c. Here are those results at FTDNA. Plus this is what is says website: https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/hill/about/results

GROUPS 12a, 12b, 12c

There are DNA branches for Group 12a, 12b, 12c, for descendants from an unknown but mutual recent common ancestor (MRCA). There are at least 2 and possibly 3 lines to this MRCA suggested by paper documentation. Group 12a lineages are proven to William Hill (1700 VA - 1787 NC) who married Susannah Smither. Group 12b leads to to John Hill (bef 1710 - c1780) of Amelia County who was the brother of the William Hill in Group 12a. Finally, the Group 12c lineages are proven to William Hill (c1742 – c1787) of Amherst. There is documentation suggesting that the William Hill of Group 12c is a grandson of John Hill of Amelia County. However, this linkage has not yet been proven. For more than 80 years genealogists have wondered if James Hill of Amherst Co. VA. who m/Anne Overton might be related to William Hill of Amherst. DNA does not support this (see Group 28, Kit: #146171). An additional DNA sample from another line to James Hill is needed for verification.

I think the William, Jr that has been attached to William Hill and Susannah Smither's is wrong and needs to be separated and the correct William Hill born c.1742-died c.1787 of Amherst should be added in. YDNA Results and that is who is Blood related.

update: merge completed

Hill-6901 and Hill-1449 appear to represent the same person because: these profiles both represent William, son of Susannah Smither(s) and should be merged. His father's DAR record notes that his (Jr.'s) dates are not right, but I don't know if the dates on Hill-1449 (which match DAR's) are the corrected dates or the "not right" dates. The age of Hill-6901 makes me think they (the dates on Hill-1449) are the corrected dates. Either way, the profiles should be merged & the two sets of dates should be included in the text, along with the DAR note "1) MOB - #463685 - WILLIAM HILL JR DATES ARE IN ERROR." Thanks!

Hill-14060 and Hill-1449 appear to represent the same person because: I don't think there were two brothers with the same name name who were chaplain at the same battle, were both ministers and both had the same participation in the state government. Both also have the same DAR sources for verification.

Hill-19372 and Hill-14060 do not represent the same person because: I think you are trying to merge the father with the son. The dates don't agree, the wives don't agree and one is a Jr. and the other is a III. Please take another look...
