Sarah Catherine (Hill) Powell [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10] was born on January 22, 1857 in Union, Tennessee, United States. [2] Her parents were John Daniel Hill Sr. (1804 - 1881) and Mary (McNeil) Hill (1810 - 1897).

Her sister was Nancy L (Hill) Waggoner (1837 - 1921).

Sarah married William Rice Powell (1843 - 1909) on October 20, 1878 in Union County, Tennessee. [2][6][7]

Both were living in Charleston. Father was a farmer and mother was a housewife. She was Sarah's 4th child. Birth was registered 2-26-1942 in Cleburne county, Arkansas by Sarah.[6]
1900 Census23 June 1900Age 43Donald, Franklin, Arkansas, United States Sarah was living with her husband William R Powell, 3 sons and 3 daughters as well as boarder Arthur Cone. They had been married 21 years and all 7 of their children were living. All of them could read, write, and speak English. All but the youngest two children were attending school. They owned their farm, free of mortgage.[2]
1910 Census21 April 1910Age 53Donald, Franklin, Arkansas, United States Sarah was the widowed head of household, living on their owned farm, free of mortgage, with daughter Willie and sons Arthur, Luther, and Erlie, all single. One of her seven children had died. She was listed as a farmer and her sons as laborers on their home farm.[3]

Earl Hill Powell lived with her at Route 3, Charleston, Franklin, Arkansas. At age 20, he was a student. His date of birth was 24 Oct 1897. He was a white native-born citizen, tall, medium build, brown eyes, black hair and no obvious physical disqualifications. [10]

19196 July 1919Age 62Richmond, KY Pvt. Luther L Powell listed his mother, Mrs. Sarah Powell to be notified in case of emergency. Address 249 Collens St, Richmond, KY on 6 July 1919 as he shipped out from New York on the Belgic. He was in Company C of 52nd Infantry Brigade, 6th Division. [8]
1920 Census16 January 1920Age 62Donald, Franklin, Arkansas, United States Sarah was the widowed head of household, living with daughter Willie Kate Powell and son Earl H Powell. She was listed as the farm manager and Earl was the farmer. Luther and his wife Nellie were living next door with their toddler daughters Mary and Lucera. Both families owned their home. [4]
