Biography

Hugh Hill was born in County Tyrone, Ulster, Ireland on Oct. 13, 1806 to Robert Hill and Mollie McFarland. He and his wife Jean Marshall had 13 children, 4 of whom perished in the Irish potato famine before their emigration to the United States.

As recounted in a remembrance by is grand daughter, Elizabeth Matchett, the family received encouragement from Hugh's brother, George, who had settled in decades earlier in western Pennsylvania, to make a new life in America. His daughter, Jean took courage to pioneer the way in 1850, and a year later the rest of the family joined her. They found an opportunity to enter cheap land from the government, and soon resettled in Palo Alto Township near Newton in Jasper County, Iowa[1]. The family soon built a log cabin on their new land, but Hugh did not have long to enjoy it, passing away Jan. 15, 1855.
