Gordon was born Gordon Alexander Hill, on the 7th of March, 1933, in Auckland, the 3rd of 3 children of James Buchanan Hill and Williamina Catherine McLachland, New Zealand.^{[1][citation needed]}

At 26, in 1959, he married Lorna Dobson in New Zealand, and they had 2 children.^{[2][citation needed]}

At 24 on the 28th of November, 1979. he died, in the Air New Zealand Flight 901 crash on Mount Erebus, Antarctica.^[3][4][5]
