Further, our ancestor's services in assisting in the establishment of American Independence is as follows: "When in the fall of 1776 the Massachusetts General Court sought to supply the demand for men for the general army by reducing the strength of the Sea Coast Defense Establishment, the Island of Martha's Vineyard was left with only one company of twenty-five men. Among the petitions of further protection sent to the General Court from said Island was one dated Chilmark, January 27, 1777, signed by 35 of the inhabitants of the town - the signature of Samuel Hillman headed the list. Among the expression of Patriotism the petition bears the following: "Your petitioners with many other inhabitants of the Island are fully satisfied that the present war is on the American side, just and necessary, and are ready to exert themselves to the utmost in every suitable way in support of the American Cause".
