Biography

Name

Mary is thought to have been born Mary Hindes, based on the will of Anne Scarlet, a contemporary woman of Salem, Massachusetts who died in 1639. [1]

Birth

Mary was probably born in England, about 1618 based on the date of her marriage. (She wasn't born in Massachusetts -- see Research Notes.)

Death

Mary is mentioned in her husband's will of 1670, and in court papers when it was proved in June 1671 - she was executrix. [2] She is known to have been still living in June 1682, when a beneficiary of that will, her son-in-law Joseph Williams, died without claiming the house in Salem, because she was still living in it.[2]

Marriage

Mary Hindes married Thomas Browning by 1636, based on their first child born 7 Jan 1637.[3] [2] Mary and Thomas had four daughters and no sons, as shown in the records of Salem and Topsfield, Massachusetts. [4][2].

Children

  1. Mary Browning, baptized 7 Jan 1637/8, married Edmund Towne, son of William and Joan (Blessing) Towne, of Salem and Topsfield.[2]
  2. Elizabeth Browning, married James Symonds[2]
  3. Sarah Browning, married Joseph Williams[2]
  4. Deborah Browning, baptized 31 Jan 1646/7, married (1) on 28 Nov 1666, John Perkins, son of Thomas and Phebe (Gould) Perkins of Topsfield. John died 19 May 1668. She married (2) on 28 Dec 1669, Capt. Isaac Meacham, son of Jeremiah and Deborah (Brown) Meacham of Salem.[2]

Research Notes

Note about Mary's place of birth:
She was not born in Plymouth, Salem, Topsfield or anywhere in Massachusetts, but most likely in England. She was probably about (or at least) eighteen at her marriage in 1636, which would make her too old to have been born in any of the towns of Massachusetts. (The earliest town was Plymouth founded 1620 -- but all residents are identified and she was not there. Salem, founded 1622, was too late for her birth, which had to be by 1618 or so.)

Hindes-1 and Hindes-3 appear to represent the same person because: I am not sure why this hasn't happened yet, but I am just suggesting we move it along. They are obviously the same person. Is it a disagreement about mom, Elizabeth Goodwin?

There are four profiles for Mary the wife of Thomas Browning. They should be merged so that Hindes-1 is the final ID# (see sources, footnotes on Hindes-1). They are:
Mary Hindes-18
Mary Hindes-3
Mary Lyndes-2
Mary Hindes-1 the final ID#

UPDATE Thanks to Roger Travis, there remains only Hindes-3 to merge into Hindes-1. I don't think this merge should be delayed because of any doubts about the mother being Elizabeth Goodwin, since there are no other proposed parents. Once the merge is completed, all the interested PMs and members will see the data and be able to collaborate on verifying the mother. The birth date is an estimate, and the location needs verifying. All other facts are confirmed by wills, deeds, vital records, etc., except the existence of Meacham Browning as her son. Could the PMs please provide a source for him?

thank you, April

Hindes-18 and Hindes-1 appear to represent the same person because: obvious duplicates, please see text and sources on Hindes-1 in case of conflicting facts. thank you, April Dauenhauer
Lyndes-2 and Hindes-1 appear to represent the same person because: Thomas Browning had only the one wife, and she was possibly or probably surnamed HIndes at birth, based on the will of her contemporary Anne Scarlet. Lyndes is evidently as typo or misspelling of Hindes, and should be merged into Hindes-1. thank you, April Dauenhauer PS please see the sources, text and footnotes on Hindes-1 for further clarification.
