Biography

Buried at Mt. Zion Methodist Cemetery, Science Hill, Pulaski Co., Kentucky. There is no photograph of a tombstone, and no evidence is provided for the specific dates in the memorial.^[1]

From Debbie Hinds or Hines: William was a young Irish man thought to be from Montgomer Co, VA He was a house carpenter by trade and a farmer. Their headstones are almost unreadable now, but are at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Northern Pulaski Co. They were carved by their youngest grandson, Francis Marion Hinds or Hines

Tax Rolls

William Hinds and James Hinds appear in the Pulaski Co. Tax Roll for the first time in 1809. They are white men over 21 years of age. No one named Hinds is there in 1807 nor in 1808. They are both there each year until 1814. James is not there in 1815, but does reappear in 1818 and in 1819. William is on the tax roll each year until his death with a few gaps that may be omissions on the part of the tax collector. In 1811 he owns 50 acres on Pitmam's Creek and in 1833 and in 1834 he owns about 40 acres on Fishing Creek. Generally he owns no land. Compared to their neighbors the Hinds have few worldly possessions, and William seems to have the least of all. In 1851 he has 1 horse worth $15, and often he has no taxable property. He did excel in the production of children.

James is probably William's brother. It is not known where he went when he left Pulaski Co. Another probable brother Thomas appears in the Pulaski Co. tax roll in 1814.

William Haynes, James Hines, John Hines and Thomas Hines are in the 1810 census for Pulaski Co.

Brothers?

It can be conjectured that Thomas Hines and this William Hines are brothers. It may be that John Hines and James Hines are two more brothers. John Hines does not appear in the Pulaski Co. tax lists.

Children

In 1870 William's wife Barbara is living with Stephen. There is no direct evidence as to who William and Barbara's other children were, although the listed children fit nicely into the age & sex categories of the 1810-1840 censuses. It is possible that some are children of William's brother Thomas and an early unidentified wife.

A significant factor in the assignment of children to William Hines is where they lived in the 1850 and 1860 censuses. In 1850 everyone listed below lives in Pulaski Co., Division #2. In 1860 they all live in Pulaski Co., District #1.

Hinds in Wayne Co.

There is a large family of Hinds in Wayne Co., Kentucky, which adjoins Pulaski Co. They came from North Carolina and appear to be unrelated to William and Thomas, who were born in Virginia.
