Biography

Maria was baptized 26 Mar 1748. She is the daughter of George Rudolphus Henckel. We don't know when she was born.

Research of Robert L. Hess

The following is from a research article sent to me (Neal Parker) by Robert L. Hess of Oakland, California. See the profile of George Rudolph Henckel. According to The Henckel Genealogy (pgs 154-55) the children of George Rudolph were George, John Balthasar, Philip Christopher, Jacob, Margaret, Henry, and other daughters. Recent research shows that this list was correct, though incomplete. Numbers in brackets indicate notes.

Maria Margaret Hinkle,[58,105] birth date unknown, possibly during the 1740s. A Maria Margaret daughter of Georg and Anna Maria Hinkel (birthdate not given) was baptized 26 Mar 1758 at Frederick, Maryland.[5] Margaret married a Mr. Schmit[57] or Smith. Her husband (or her father-in-law) was possibly the Andrew Smith who in 1764 had been appointed to the commission to establish the bounds of George Hinkle's Long Bottom tract and was replaced because he was possibly "in some way related to the said George Hinkle." [40]

NOTES for MARIA MARGARET HINKLE:

5. Register of the Reformed church at Frederick, MD (as translated by W. J. Hinke & E. W. Reinicke in Records of the Evangelical Reformed Church in Frederick Maryland 1746-1800, Family Line Publications, Silver Spring MD, 1986); under baptisms:
16 Mar 1758, George Hinckel and wife Anna Maria had a child Maria Margaret bapt. 26 March 1758 (birthdate not given). Thomas & Maria Margaret Schley were sponsors.

40. Frederick County, MD, Judgment Records, Vol. M, page 232 (June Court 1764) appointment of first commission to determine the bounds of George Hinkle's tract Long Bottom; the commission consisted of Mathias Howard, Richard Simpson, Andrew Smith, and "George Hinkle, Jr."

57. Correspondence from John F. Dern of Redwood City, CA, to Robert L. Hess, Oakland, CA, 6 Aug 1993:
"About 1787, #521 [Rev.] Paul Hinkel listed the children of Georg Henkel, son of the 'ersten Henkel' [the first Henkel in America, Anthony Jacob Henckel], as: George, Balser, Jacob, Margret Schmit, Philip, Jo___. He knew them all ... I have never settled on ... a plausable reason for the order in which he listed them."

58. The Henckel Genealogy; pages 154-159 (sons and daughters of HG #4 George Rudolph Henckel).

105. Henckel Genealogical Bulletin; pages 1316-1317 (Fall 2002), 1379-1386 (Spring 2004), and 1404-1432 (Spring 2005).

Birth Date

Since she was baptized about 28 years after the probable birthdate of her eldest sibling, it really isn't possible to estimate a birth date from the baptismal date, i.e., it is unlikely that she was born only a short time before she was baptized.

The Henckel Genealogy

The following is on page 155 of The Henckel Genealogy:

45 Margaret Hinkle. No birth, baptismal, church confirmation or other data available.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Maria by comparing test results with other carriers of her ancestors' mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Maria:
