Elijah was born in 1797, the son of John Hinkle and Sarah Weaver. He married Mary Reese Whitmire in 1824. Elijah passed away in 1898.[1]
From the Keowee Courier Issue of Oct. 18, 1888: "Squire Elijah Hinkle died at his residence on Cane Creek, in Pickens Co., on Sunday morning last. He was said to be one hundred and three years old". The Sunday morning last was 14 Oct 1888. Actually, Elijah would have been 91 years of age. The censuses verify his age.
Elijah was buried at the home place in Jocassee and later his grave was moved to the Whitewater Baptist Church across the state line in NC. (This church was formerly called Bohaney Church). Mary Whitmire Hinkle is also buried there. The new tombstone death date for Elijah is incorrect.
